The main criterion for isosterism is that two isosteric molecules must present similar, if not identical, volumes, and shapes. Ideally, isosteric compounds should be isomorphic and able to cocrystaflize. Among the other physical properties that isosteric compounds usually share one can cite boiling point, density, viscosity, and thermal conductivity. However, certain properties must be different dipolar moments, polarity, polarization, size, and shape (e.g. in comparing F and OH , the size and the shape of H cannot be totally neglected). After all, the external orbital may be hybridized differently. [Pg.293]

In conclusion, it became evident to the physicists that the concept of isosterism, developed before quantum-mechanical theories, conld not provide at the molecular level the same results as those that the periodic classification [Pg.293]

This section contains examples applying the presented concepts in which measured Cb and /U/b, satellite rat neuropharmacokinetic studies, and/or measured Cp and fU/P were used to determine compound-dependent Cb,u required for a specific mechanism-mediated in vivo effect. The presented studies demonstrate the utility of Cb,u in defining target pharmacology relationships for small molecules affecting transmembrane proteins. [Pg.64]

With this set of five optimized reaction conditions in hand (Fig. 5.6), the production of a small DHPM library was performed. As a set of structurally diverse representative building blocks, 17 individual CH-acidic carbonyl compounds, 25 aldehydes, and 8 ureas/thioureas were chosen. Combination of all these building blocks would lead to a library of 3400 individual DHPMs. To demonstrate the practicability of the presented concept, a representative subset library of 48 DHPM analogues involving all of the aforementioned building blocks was generated [2],... [Pg.102]

The presented concept leads to a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model. The binary variables representing assignment decisions and sequencing decisions are complemented by continuous variables representing timings, durations, hold-ups, feed streams, supplied product, under- and overproduction. The... [Pg.145]

X-ray diffraction methods have been indispensable in the development of the present concept of cellulose structure, but Mark15 has offered the opinion that such methods alone are ill-suited to the quantitative determination of crystalline and non-crystalline fractions. Chemical methods which depend upon the greater reactivity or accessibility of the incompletely ordered regions have offered an alternative approach to the problem. [Pg.121]

While a number of introductory or comprehensive texts dealing with polymer chemistry were written, the most influential was probably Paul J. Flory s textbook "Principles of Polymer Chemistry", published in 1954. No prior knowledge of polymers was assumed with particular chapters directed at the beginner. It also contained much information useful to the experienced investigator. A wealth of experimental data was included to illustrate the applicability of the presented concepts and conclusions. Admittedly missing are topics related to the mechanical properties of polymers and to the application of polymers in industry - i.e. fabrication, synthesis, etc. Even so Flory s text is a landmark book in science. [Pg.132]

The present concept of continuous coating is one in which uncoated product is constantly fed in at one end, and completely coated product comes out at the other end. Processes of this type had their origins in other industries (especially food and agricultural, where batch sizes are routinely much larger than those dealt with in the pharmaceutical industry). [Pg.480]

Perhaps the most intriguing feature of the described theory is the validity of the stress-optical relation also for flowing systems. In fact, the validity of this relation forms the central point of the present concept, viz. the usefulness of flow birefringence measurements for the investigation of elastico-viscous properties. [Pg.256]

This subject has been of continuing interest for several reasons. First, the present concepts of the chemical constitution of such important biopolymers as cellulose, amylose, and chitin can be confirmed by their adequate chemical synthesis. Second, synthetic polysaccharides of defined structure can be used to study the action pattern of enzymes, the induction and reaction of antibodies, and the effect of structure on biological activity in the interaction of proteins, nucleic acids, and lipides with polyhydroxylic macromolecules. Third, it is anticipated that synthetic polysaccharides of known structure and molecular size will provide ideal systems for the correlation of chemical and physical properties with chemical constitution and macromolecular conformation. Finally, synthetic polysaccharides and their derivatives should furnish a large variety of potentially useful materials whose properties can be widely varied these substances may find new applications in biology, medicine, and industry. [Pg.432]

On the basis of our present concept of lignin structure, generally two types of condensation reaction are expected to occur A and B. [Pg.139]

In the latter preparation, about 0.05 a-CO groups per C6-C3 were found in phenolic units (26). It is known that the phenolic hydroxyl in acetovanillone or in similar phenolic ketones is quite acidic (21) (pK = 8) reducing these ketones would decrease the acidity to the usual level of phenols (pK = 10, or still higher in sterically hindered phenols). This observation is a further indication that our present concept concerning the presence of a-CO groups in kraft lignin (24) is right. [Pg.150]

Metal binding in procarboxypeptidase A is weaker than in the active enzyme ( 107), Table 7). It was proposed that the bonding involves sulfur and a weaker ligand than N (107). In view of the present concept of the chelating site in carboxypeptidase, further studies of the zymogen are necessary. In that connection, the cobalt complex should be valuable. [Pg.183]

The modifier metrological is used advisedly to distinguish the present concept from (historical) traceability of, e.g., materials, instruments, and documents. [Pg.31]

Isbell.60 This scheme was presented, not as established fact, but rather as an interpretation based on present concepts of the mechanisms of organic reactions. [Pg.120]

Minerals are now considered far from solid and impermeable substances. They may not only have cracks, cleavage planes, pores, and cavities, but according to our present concepts, are built up of small unit blocks somewhat like a brick wall. [Pg.477]

In order to show that the verificationist and the Tarskian ingredients present in the account are incompatible, one has to show that the two can differ in the sense that the verificationist and the Tarskian truth conditions depict different and incompatible situations. But this cannot happen, because the justification conditions which figure in the determination of reference are infallible, as it was said in 3.1. It does happen though that we know the Tarskian truth condition of a sentence, but do not know its justification condition. But this is no objection, for it is part of the account. As it was pointed out, Tarskian truth can go beyond what can be verified. This is why the present conception is only modestly verificationist. [Pg.78]

In the present concept of the structure of crystalline polymers there is only room for the fringed micelle model when polymers of low crystallinity are concerned. For polymers of intermediate degrees of crystallinity, a structure involving "paracrystals" and discrete amorphous regions seems probable. For highly crystalline polymers there is no experimental evidence whatsoever of the existence of discrete amorphous regions. Here the fringed micelle model has to be rejected, whereas the paracrystallinity model is acceptable. [Pg.31]

In 1959 when the first pheromone bombykol [(10 ,12 Z)-10,12-he.xadecadien-1 -ol] was identified as the female-produced sex attractant of the silkworm moth Bombyx mori, the pheromonal activity was thought to be totally due to that single compound.6 At present, it is generally believed that a pheromone is composed of many pheromone components (see Chapter 4.04), which resembles the present concept in flavor and fragrance chemistry, that is, to consider a mixture as a whole to be responsible for a particular sense of smell (see Chapter 4.15). [Pg.2]

With the extremely small or the extremely large, with inconceivably brief or extended phenomena, science has a difficult time. It is by no means clear that our present concepts or even our existing language is suitable for these ranges. [Pg.303]

The present concepts of pest management have evolved from basic knowledge of the chemical interactions between organisms. [Pg.220]

The present concept requires a new, more efficient manipulation of EMs in the computer. An EM is described by three lists of essential information a list of atoms, a list of bonds and a list of stereochemicaly relevant partitionings. All the elements of the lists are correlated through references with exactly defined semantics. Thus we have a dynamical structure without upper bounds for the number of atoms, or bonds. Furthermore, additional references between structural subunits join these directly in a chemically meaningful way, e.g. two Atom-structures via the corresponding hond-structure and vice versa. This substantially facilitates the retrieval of information. [Pg.222]

If the introduction of entropy concepts is a sign of the maturity of a field of research, it can be concluded from this survey that our present concepts on adsorption and chemisorption have now reached their ultimate stage of refinement. But the evolution from energy to entropy is very recent history. [Pg.416]
