Ethyl cellulose plastics properties

Ethyl cellulose (EC) is a water-insoluble cellulose ether. It is produced by reaction of alkali cellulose with ethylene chloride. It has film-forming and thermoplastic properties. As a plastic, it can be processed by extrusion and injections. It is hard, stiff and with good resistance to impact. It is soluble in the molten state with other thermoplastics. As for its film-forming properties, it is used in the formulation of varnishes, inks and glues. It forms removable coatings. [Pg.125]

Isopropyl ocetote is a wofer-whife pleosont-odored liquid with properties intermediote between ethyl and butyl acetates. It is miscible with most of the common organic solvents such os alcohols, ketones, esters, oils, hydrocarbons, etc., and it is a solvent for nitrocellulose, cellulose ocetate (of low viscosity) and a wide ronge of oils, fats, waxes, gums ond notural and synthetic resins. Like n-propyl ocetote, its solvent power for cellulose esters is increosed when lower aliphatic alcohols are added. It is largely used in the lacquer industry where its slow evaporation rate and blush resistance ore of importance. It is also used in the monufacture of plastics, artificial leather, dopes, films, cements, and in the recovery of acetic ocid from aqueous solutions. [Pg.820]

Ethylcelluloses are low density polymers (1070-1180 kg.m ) with solubilities depending on the degree of ethylation usually commercial grade contains 44-48% ethoxyl functional groups. Solid masses of ethylcellulose exhibit low absorption of moisture, excellent dimensional stability and low temperature toughness and impact resistance. Chemically they are less resistant towards acids than cellulose esters but much more resistant to alkalis. They can be processed by injection molding. Because ethylcellulose is soluble in a wide variety of solvents, it provides a wide variety of varnish formulations. Benzylcelluloses yield plastics with excellent dielectric properties and chemical stability. [Pg.701]
