The remaining errors in the data are usually described as random, their properties ultimately attributable to the nature of our physical world. Random errors do not lend themselves easily to quantitative correction. However, certain aspects of random error exhibit a consistency of behavior in repeated trials under the same experimental conditions, which allows more probable values of the data elements to be obtained by averaging processes. The behavior of random phenomena is common to all experimental data and has given rise to the well-known branch of mathematical analysis known as statistics. Statistical quantities, unfortunately, cannot be assigned definite values. They can only be discussed in terms of probabilities. Because (random) uncertainties exist in all experimentally measured quantities, a restoration with all the possible constraints applied cannot yield an exact solution. The best that may be obtained in practice is the solution that is most probable. Actually, whether an error is classified as systematic or random depends on the extent of our knowledge of the data and the influences on them. All unaccounted errors are generally classified as part of the random component. Further knowledge determines many errors to be systematic that were previously classified as random. [Pg.263]

Precision in the measured diffusivities is limited by the reproducibility of the echo height measurements and by field gradient calibration. Under favorable circumstances, both of these can be kept below about 1 %, although for less time-consuming and routine measurements, 2-3 % random uncertainty is more typical. If comparisons among different samples are more important than comparisons with other work on similar samples, then calibration error is quasisystematic and secondary. In that case, perhaps 4% calibration uncertainty may be acceptable, requiring measurement of G or G0 to within 2% (see Eqs. 1, 2). [Pg.8]

Accuracy (absence of systematic errors) and uncertainty (coefficient of variation or confidence interval) as caused by random errors and random variations in the procedure are the basic parameters to be considered when discussing analytical results. As stressed in the introduction, accuracy is of primary importance however, if the uncertainty in a result is too high, it cannot be used for any conclusion concerning, e.g. the quality of the environment or of food. An unacceptably high uncertainty renders the result useless. The treatment above assumes that the uncertainty of a measurement has an equal chance of being positive or negative. If, however, an instrument has a zero error, then a constant correction has to be applied to each measurement before we can consider the effect of these random uncertainties. Measurements invariably involve errors and uncertainties. Only a few of these are due to mistakes on the part of the experimenter. Random, or indeterminate, errors exist in every measurement. They can never be totally eliminated and are often the major source of uncertainty in a determination. Random errors are caused by the many uncontrollable variables that are an inevitable part of every analysis. Most contributors to random error cannot be positively identified. Even if we can identify sources of uncertainty, it is usually impossible to measure them because most are so small that they cannot be detected individually. The accumulated effect of the individual uncertainties, however, causes replicate measurements to fluctuate randomly around the mean of the set. Statistical methods provide an approach that yields quantitative estimates of the random uncertainties in the raw data measurements themselves and also in the conclusions drawn from them. The uncertainty on the result arises from both random and systematic effects but in trace analysis systematic effects largely determine the uncertainty of an analytical result. The. search for and correction of systematic errors is therefore an important responsibility of every trace analyst. The term repeatability refers to the agreement between the results of a number of measurements of the same quantity performed by the same method, the same observer, and the same instrument in the presence of random fluctuations (i.e., errors). Here the random uncertainty, a relative or absolute plus/minus semirange of an interval around the mean value, is usually indicated. A measure is the standard deviation or a certain multiple of the standard deviation. A high repeatability means a small random uncertainty (i.e., small random errors). In most cases, the repeatability is higher than the accuracy because random errors can occur independent of systematic ones. Similar to the accuracy, the repeatability can vary from one process to another in a given instrument.
