Although immediate reactions of anaphylaxis, bronchospasm, and urticaria have been reported, most commonly patients exhibiting an adverse reaction develop a maculopapular rash, usually after several days of therapy. They may also develop fever and eosinophilia (80,219). Cefoperazone (34) and ceftriaxone (39), having greater biUary excretion than other cephalosporins, are associated with an increased risk of diarrhea, which may be caused by selection of cytotoxin producing stains of Clostridium difficile (219). [Pg.39]

AIA runs a characteristic clinical course [9]. It is more frequent in women than men, and is unusual in children, beginning in adulthood, on average at the age of 30 years. Rhinorrhea and nasal congestion are usually the first symptoms, subsequently complicated by polyposis. Asthma and aspirin hypersensitivity develop 2-15 years later. Once developed, aspirin intolerance remains through life, although sporadic disappearance of intolerance has been reported. Asthma, characterized by blood and nasal eosinophilia, rims a protracted course despite avoidance of analgesics. In about half the patients, the course of asthma is severe, necessitating use of systemic corticosteroids. [Pg.173]

Diffuse fascitis with eosinophilia was reported in a woman who had used well water contaminated with trichloroethylene (14 mg/L) for 6 years (Waller et al. 1994). [Pg.93]

L-tryptophan is a naturally-produced, natural amino acid used as a dietary supplement. Samples from one manufacturer were found to be contaminated by trace amounts of another naturally occurring compound — l,l -ethylidene bis-[i.-tryptophan]. The latter compound appears to have been responsible for causing a number of deaths and additional cases of chronic eosinophilia-myalgia,111 some of which might have been prevented had there... [Pg.40]

Cytotoxicity of methylamine [45], kidney liver and myocardial damage due to ethylamine [46], hepatosplenomegaly and eosinophilia due to aniline [47], euphoria, dyspnea, teratogenicity, renal failure, hematuria, proteinurea, anorexia and methanoglobinemia due to a-naphthylamine and diphenylamine have been reported in the literature [48-54]. Therefore the remediation and mineralization of amines is... [Pg.316]

Acute drug-related hypersensitivity reactions (allergic responses) may cause tubulointerstitial nephritis, which will damage the tubules and interstitium. These reactions are most commonly observed with administration of methicillin and other synthetic antibiotics as well as furosemide and the thiazide diuretics. The onset of symptoms occurs in about 15 days. Symptoms include fever, eosinophilia, hematuria (blood in the urine), and proteinuria (proteins in the urine). Signs and symptoms of acute renal failure develop in about 50% of the cases. Discontinued use of the drug usually results in complete recovery however, some patients, especially the elderly, may experience permanent renal damage. [Pg.340]

The amino acid precursor for 5-HT, L-tryptophan, increases the biosynthesis 5-HT and, therefore, has been investigated for potential antidepressant properties, but with mixed results (Green and Costain, 1979). It was withdrawn in 1990, following a number of fatal cases of eosinophilia myalgia (a disorder characterised by severe muscle pain and abnormally high levels of one type of white blood cell, the eosinophil) in individuals principally using it as a natural hypnotic. [Pg.177]

As mentioned above, a prototypic type 2 response is mounted against nematode infection in most cases (consisting of elevated IgE, eosinophilia and intestinal mastocytosis), with a number of coexisting variables likely to... [Pg.357]

Eosinophilia is a hallmark of intestinal nematode infection and is known to be under the control of IL-5 (Finkelman et al., 1992). As discussed above, treatment with anti-IL-5 monoclonal antibody (and so ablation of eosinophilia) had no effect on expulsion of T. muris, 77. polygyms, N. brasiliensis or T. spiralis infections, suggesting that either redundant mechanisms operate under these circumstances or that eosinophils are not a critical component of effector responses operating against most murine... [Pg.361]
