Both human and animal health products need to be safe, efficacious, and of defined quality. For major markets in the world, both animal and human products need to be manufactured in GMP facilities. For human products, regulatory requirements are set for the areas of toxicity, safety, dosing intervals, therapeutic effect, stability, manufacturing, etc. Veterinary products not only include all of the above but are also required to address tissue residue, handler safety, and environmental assessment, particularly if the product is for food-producing animals. If producing a new antimicrobial agent for food-producing animals, the issue of antimicrobial resistance also needs to be addressed. Details about these special requirements were covered in section Residue of this chapter. 

The purpose of stability testing is to assess the effects of temperature, humidity, light, and other environmental factors on the quality of a drug substance or product. The data produced are used to establish storage conditions, retest periods, shelf loss, and to justify overages included in products for stability reasons. The most useful equation relating temperature and reaction rate is the Arrhenius equation. This equation (27) may be integrated and rewritten as Eqs. (31) and (32).

The short-term stability study is conducted over extreme environmental conditions to increase the rate of chemical degradation. The data obtained from short-term stability studies are normally used to evaluate longer term chemical effects at nonextreme storage conditions, but they are also helpful to assess the effect of shortterm excursions outside the recommended storage conditions that might occur during shipping. The hazard assessment is to include identification of a worst-case scenario and other more likely scenarios for release of a regulated substance, and analyze the off-site consequences of such releases. The release and consequence assessment is to include the rate, duration, and quantity of the release, the distances for exposure or damage (using atmospheric, called "F" stability and a 1.5-m/s wind, and most-often-occurring conditions), populations that could be exposed, and environmental damage that could be expected.

Our approach to this problem has been to synthesize several of these potential transformation products, to test their ability to inhibit acetylcholinesterase in vitro as well as their toxicity to a suitable insect indicator species and to begin an assessment of their stability under environmental conditions. In this connection it was deemed necessary to measure the volatility of the more potent inhibitors. 

Arsenic, chromium, mercury, selenium, and tin have been the object of numerous investigations. Because some of them are classified as probable human carcinogens23-25 (strictly speaking, some of their species), the accurate assessment of concentration and speciation in environmental matrices is enormously important. Unfortunately, such factors as chemical reactions between species, low concentration, microbial activity, redox conditions, as well as the presence of other dissolved metal ions, may cause the amounts and distributions of chemical species in a sample to vary. In response to these problems, analytical research efforts have focused on developing techniques enabling the original valence state of the metals to be preserved. Table 2.3 lists some of these stabilization methods. 

The focus of this program was to evaluate the environmental impacts of the current standard material formulations and alternative formulations.95 The partnership used a life-cycle assessment (LCA) approach to examine the impacts of heat stabilizers, polymer systems, and flame-retardants used in insulation and jacketing for selected wire and cable products. The project began in March 2004 and the report was issued in May 2008.96... 

Additives. Formulation additives do not always have a positive effect on moisture resistance. Therefore, selection of additives must go through a similar assessment process as the base polymer with respect to hydrolytic stability. Any polymeric additive used to modify the properties of the base resin should be considered for its possible effect on moisture resistance and environmental durability.
