Operational environment checks should include those on power supplies, ambient temperature and humidity, vibration and dust levels, Electro-Magnetic Interference (EMI), Radio Frequency Interference (RFl), and Electrostatic Discharges (ESD) as relevant to the needs of the computer system. However, these requirements go further than merely controlling the devices used for measurement. They address the measurements themselves, the selection of the devices for measurement and also apply to devices which create product features, if they are used for product verification purposes. If you rely on jigs, tools, fixtures, templates, patterns, etc. to form shapes or other characteristics and have no other means of verifying the shape achieved, these devices become a means of verification. If you use software to control equipment, simulate the environment or operational conditions, or carry out tests and you rely on that software doing what it is supposed to do, without any separate means of checking the result, the quality of such software becomes critical to product verification. In fact the requirements apply to metrology as a whole rather than being limited to the equipment that is used to obtain the measurement and therefore a more appropriate title of the section would be Control of measurements . [Pg.397]

While you may not rely entirely on these tools to accept product, the periodic calibration or verification of these tools may help prevent unnecessary costs and production delays. While usage and environment may assist in determining the frequency of verification hardware checks, these factors do not affect software. Any bugs in software have always been there or were introduced when it was last modified. Quality control tests are intended to detect produced materials which deviate from manufacturing specifications, and thus may result in questionable performance. The materials are usually subjected to spectrographic analysis which is the primary quality control check. The exposure tests are necessarily of short duration (hours or days), in which the test conditions attempt to reflect the environment of operation, for example using artificial seawater for a marine application. After obtaining the prototypes, tests must be made to determine the utility. Generally these include a short time destructive test to determine the strength and to check out the basic design. Another test that is done is to use the product in the projected environment with stress levels increased in a rational manner to make for an accelerated life test. Other tests may include consumer acceptance tests to determine what instructions in proper use are required, tests for potential safety hazards, electrical tests, self-extinguishing tests, and any others that the product requires.
