This Chapter is written for chemists and others seeking an idea of where recent developments in macromolecular chemistry have influenced, or are likely to influence, technological outcomes. Outcomes here embraces not only what has been done recently, but also what could be done and what would be desirable. [Pg.331]

The past 20 years, and particularly the past 10, have seen anenormousexpansion in the variety of applications of polymeric materials, to such an extent that a survey of the technological implications of polymer chemistry is potentially a survey of all technology. Any review must then be highly selective. The selection of developements for this chapter was inevitably based on a personal estimate of some of the things which are interesting and important, bearing in mind the economic factor. [Pg.331]

Final State Properties.— Reviewed under this heading are developments in the nature and prediction of those properties of solid polymeric materials, including composites, which have engineering significance, and which can be related back to the macromolecular configurations and chemical composition of the polymer chain. These are, chiefly  [Pg.331]

Under (iii) is included any work on electrical and thermal properties which have particular relevance to engineering objectives. Specifically excluded arc references to developments touching on the semiconductor or microelectronics fields. With this exclusion, the book by Van Heerden Properties of Polymere  [Pg.331]

A substantial review of some of the more recent engineering science studies of polymer processing has been assembled by Suh and Sung.  [Pg.332]

From the beginning of this century, the demand for asbestos fibers grew in a spectacular fashion for numerous applications, in particular for thermal insulation in steam engines and technologies (4). Moreover, the development of the Hatschek machine in 1900 for the continuous fabrication of sheets from an asbestos—cement composite opened an important field of industrial application for asbestos fibers. [Pg.344]

Databases may be viewed as a research tool for those in highly competitive fields such as science, engineering, and technology. This tool makes information available so that its user can make decisions based on comprehensive and timely data (7). A guide to commercially available databases relating to topics associated with science and technology follows. [Pg.458]

Since the first edition was published, many universities have developed courses or course content in chemical process safety. This new emphasis on process safety is the result of the positive influences from industry and the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Based on faculty feedback, this textbook is an excellent application of the fundamental topics that are taught in the first three years of the undergraduate education. [Pg.647]
