Emissivity of carbon dioxide

Utility systems as sources of waste. The principal sources of utility waste are associated with hot utilities (including cogeneration systems) and cold utilities. Furnaces, steam boilers, gas turbines, and diesel engines all produce waste from products of combustion. The principal problem here is the emission of carbon dioxide, oxides of sulfur and nitrogen, and particulates (metal oxides, unbumt... [Pg.290]

Perhaps the biggest environmental challenge for ironmaking processes into the twenty-first century involves responding to the concerns about global warming. Ironmaking processes require the use of carbon-based reductants, and ultimately result in the emission of carbon dioxide. [Pg.422]

Land/atmospheric interfacial processes which impact climate and biological activity on earth are illustrated in Figure 3. Emissions of carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen dioxide, and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) have been linked to the transmission of solar radiation to the surface of the earth as well as to the transmission of terrestrial radiation to space. Should solar radiation be an internal process or an external driver of the hydrologic cycle, weather, and air surface temperatures Compounds of sulfur and nitrogen are associated with acidic precipitation and damage to vegetation, aquatic life, and physical structures. [Pg.11]

Biomass resources are a major component of strategies to mitigate global climate change. Plant growth recycles C02 from the atmosphere, and the use of biomass resources for energy and chemicals results in low net emissions of carbon dioxide. Since the emissions of NOx and SOx from biomass facilities are also typically low, it is a technology that helps to reduce acid rain. [Pg.120]

The consensus of scientists with expertise in climate and weather issues appears to he that global warming is of sufficient concern to demand some form of political action. They argue that it is more prudent to act now to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases and reduce the risk of global warming than to... [Pg.91]

Figure 1.2 It is estimated that global emission of carbon dioxide will continue to rise well into 2025. Figure 1.2 It is estimated that global emission of carbon dioxide will continue to rise well into 2025.
Worldwide efforts to reduce carbon emissions officially began in 2005 with the Kyoto Protocol. The Protocol is a United Nations agreement to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. The role of the United Nations is partially to formulate international laws and security measures. As of November 2007,174 nations had signed the Kyoto Protocol, thereby committing themselves to reducing carbon emissions on the schedule detailed in the Protocol. [Pg.73]

This eliminated enough of the carbon to get readable patterns. The major minerals determined were quartz, calcite, kaolinite, and chlorite. The most obvious and abundant mineral, quartz, decreased in relative amounts toward the center of the xenolith, and this trend was apparent in all the other minerals. Diffraction patterns of the ash from the whole coke, in general, showed the same mineral decrease trend except, of course, no calcite at all was detectable. Calcination or emission of carbon dioxide from calcite occurs at 898°C. (7), significantly below the ashing temperature of 950°C. [Pg.714]

Emissions of carbon dioxide are comparable with emissions from a conventional coal plant. However, should future environmental regulations require the removal of CO2, an IGCC plant can separate and sequester CO2 from the process at a significantly lower cost than conventional technologies. [Pg.483]

The production of fuel ethanol from renewable lignocellulosic material ("bioethanol") has the potential to reduce world dependence on petroleum and to decrease net emissions of carbon dioxide. The lignin-hemicellulose network of biomass retards cellulose biodegradationby cellulolytic enzymes. To remove the protecting shield of lignin-hemicellulose and make the cellulose more readily available for enzymatic hydrolysis, biomass must be pretreated (1). [Pg.347]

I started working with SurePower during this project and performed an environmental analysis of the system. I found many benefits other than high reliability and low life-cycle cost. Compared with a traditional system using a ups and the electric grid, the SurePower system had a superior environmental performance. It had more than 40 percent lower emissions of carbon dioxide (co2, the primary greenhouse gas) and less than one one-thousandth the... [Pg.15]
