The National Center for Manufacturing Sciences (NCMS) backed by a consortium of North American industrial corporations, national laboratories, and academic institutions conducted an evaluation of alternatives to eutectic Sn-Pb solder between 1992 and 1996. Corporate participants included ATT-Lucent, Ford Motor Company, GM-Delco Electronics, GM-Hughes Aircraft, Hamilton Standard, National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST), Rensse-lear Polytechnic Institute, Rockwell International, Sandia National Laboratories, Texas Instruments, and the U.S. Navy s Electronics Manufacturing Productivity Facility. The goal of the project was to determine whether safe, cost-effective, nontoxic, reliable lead solder alternatives could be identified. With over 79 alloys examined, the study results indicated that while a number of possible lead-free solders were functionally possible, there was no universal drop-in replacement for lead-based solders in electronics applications. A lightning strike caused a fire in a Phillips electronics semi-conductor facility in New Mexico in March 2000. Millions of silicon chips used in mobile phones manufactured by Ericsson and Nokia were damaged. Nokia reacted quickly to the disruption by going to a backup supplier and production returned to normal in 3 weeks. Phillips was the sole supplier to Ericsson and Ericsson s production of mobile phones was affect for several weeks, which resulted in 640 million loss in 2000 and the eventual loss of the North American mobile phone market. Nokia s market share increased by 30% (Christopher and Peck, 2004). The US West Coast ports lockout affected 29 ports and lasted 11 days. The beneficial impact of converting the solder used on printed circuit board (PCB) assemblies is clear from data provided by several Japanese electronics manufacturers, who are among the first to convert their lines to lead (Pb)-free assembly. For example, Matsushita Electric (Panasonic) noted by the end of March 2003 that Pb-free solder was utilized in about 12,000 models manufactured in 22 domestic and 79 overseas facilities. Up to that point, Matsushita produced a total of about 70 million Pb-free solder PCB assemblies. In the prior year (2002), before completely switching over to lead-free, Matsushita utilized 2400 tons of solder for its products [40]. [Pg.145]

While maintenance activities are important, surfactants find use in many industries in cleaning the equipment or products which are made. Electronics, food and metal product manufacturing are some examples of this kind of application. Restaurants, hospitals, hotels, as well as factories and offices regularly employ surfactants to maintain the health and safety of people utilising these facilities. A distinct industry has evolved to supply products in these applications where leaders include Ecolab and Johnson-Diversey but many, many more producers are also involved.
