Switch over

In the microcanonical ensemble, the signature of a first-order phase transition is the appearance of a van der Waals loop m the equation of state, now written as T(E) or P( ). The P( ) curve switches over from one... [Pg.2267]

The chemist can try to separate the two isomers by careful fractional distillation but it will be next to impossible to do because both the cis and the trans have practically the same boiling point. There are a few things that the chemist can do or hope for to get rid of that cis isomer. The cis configuration is less stable than the trans and may switch over to the trans configuration with a little help. The chemist can gently heat the isosafrole oil to about 150°C for an hour or so. She can also try the same heating except have the oil mixed with some acetic acid. Also, the isosafrole can be fractionally distilled to ultra purity and then be allowed to simply sit for a couple of days. Trans isosafrole may spontaneously crystalize out while the cis form remains as an oil. They can then be separated by filtration. [Pg.44]

In addition, iu May 1988 an iucident at Shell s Norco plant (54) limited production. These outages hastened many customers to switch over to other solvent substitutes. The price of MEKia October 1994 was about 0.88/kg. Supply fluctuations caused the price to range from 0.55 to 1.10 /kg siace the early 1980s. [Pg.490]

Regenerative heat exchangers of both the fixed-bed and moving-bed types (67) have been considered for MHD use. The more recent efforts have focused on the fixed-bed type (68), which operates intermittently through recycling. A complete preheater subsystem for a plant requites several regenerators with switch-over valves to deflver a continuous supply of preheated air. The outlet temperature of the air then varies between a maximum and a minimum value during the preheat cycle. [Pg.427]

The earhest commercial route to -butyraldehyde was a multistep process starting with ethanol, which was consecutively dehydrogenated to acetaldehyde, condensed to crotonaldehyde, and reduced to butyraldehyde. In the late 1960s, production of -butyraldehyde (and isobutyraldehyde) in Europe and the United States switched over largely to the Oxo reaction of propylene. [Pg.380]

Figure 4.9 illustrates transient-free switching through such electrolyte starters. This is a definite advantage of electrolytic switching over conventional Y/A or autotransformer switching. [Pg.78]

This type of switching provides very smooth acceleration. This is an advantage of electrolyte switchings over other conventional types of switchings. It exerts no kicks and calls for no special coupling arrangement to transmit the power smoothly to the drive if the requirement of the drive is to be precise and to have a smoother acceleration. [Pg.79]

The only human actions important in more than 50% of the BWR IPEs are manual depressurization, containment venting, initiation of standby liquid control (SLC), and system alignment for decay heat removal. In PWRs, only switch over to recirculation, feed-and-blecd, and the actions associated with depressurization and cooldown are important in more than 50% of the... [Pg.183]

The model (23) is simple to study, but unfortunately not very widely applicable. In general, one is more interested in situations where the interfaces are free to fold around and to assume every possible conformation. A second possible approach is to switch over to a lattice formulation. This has been done by a number of groups [231-233]. The resulting models are very... [Pg.668]

The separation plant had been running smoothly for several weeks and the planned shutdown was some time away. On the day of the incident a number of unusual events occurred which contributed to its development. Shortly after the start of his day shift, the control room operator received a high vibration alarm from booster pump A in the crude fluid separation building. Following normal procedure, he switched over to the standby pump (pump B), switched off pump A, and told his supervisor of the alarm. The supervisor subsequently organized a work permit for work to be carried out on pump A by the day shift maintenance team. The permit was issued and repair work... [Pg.294]

On the surface it would seem that global nitrogen fertilization is beneficial in that it reduces the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere and thus its radiative forcing. However, it raises the question of how long global biomass can continue to respond in this way. Should the northern forests switch over from nitrogen fertilization to nitrogen saturation, or if other nutri-... [Pg.339]

The form of this functional relationship remains the same, no matter how the rate of the reaction is defined. It is only the constants of proportionality and their dimensions that change while switching over from one definition to another. [Pg.294]

As previously discussed (Section 3 in Chapter 3), the Ba-free catalyst showed no significant storage capacity of NO under lean condition and accordingly no N2 was formed upon the H2 switch over this sample. A different picture was apparent for the... [Pg.202]

From his initial work on the studies of solvent properties of non-aqueous solvents and later on the measurement of ultrasonic velocity, Prof. Pankaj switched over to sono-chemical studies in aqueous solutions involving inorganic systems, after his European Community Post-Doctoral Fellowship (1990 - 91) at the Department of Physics,... [Pg.414]

We next focus on the use of fixed-site cofactors and coenzymes. We note that much of this coenzyme chemistry is now linked to very local two-electron chemistry (H, CH3", CH3CO-, -NH2,0 transfer) in enzymes. Additionally, one-electron changes of coenzymes, quinones, flavins and metal ions especially in membranes are used very much in very fast intermediates of twice the one-electron switches over considerable electron transfer distances. At certain points, the chains of catalysis revert to a two-electron reaction (see Figure 5.2), and the whole complex linkage of diffusion and carriers is part of energy transduction (see also proton transfer and Williams in Further Reading). There is a variety of additional coenzymes which are fixed and which we believe came later in evolution, and there are the very important metal ion cofactors which are separately considered below. [Pg.205]

Total Amount of Adsorbed Oxygen. The amount of adsorbed oxygen can easily be estimated from the graphical integration of the 2 °2 response curve. After the catalyst surface had completely been reduced by a pure hydrogen stream for about 5 hrs, the stream was switched over to a pure helium stream and then the (inc.,0)-C>2> the 0 (dec. , 0)-C and again the ( (inc.jO) -C>2 responses were followed successively. This procedure was repeated after changing the concentration of 0. Fig.l clearly shows a delay for the C>2 (inc. , 0) -C>2 response (Runl) at first time and shows an instantaneous response for both the successive 0 (dec.,0)-C ... [Pg.212]

Figure 5.12 depicts the corresponding adiabatic one-dimensional potential for the covalent rHF proton-transfer coordinate, showing the barrierless switch-over at equilibrium between FH F and F HF bond patterns. The potential well is seen to be extremely flat in the neighborhood of equilibrium, corresponding to the extremely low IR frequency of the proton-transfer mode (1299 cm-1, red-shifted... [Pg.620]
