Economy, sustainable

The Brundtland Commission identified three steps needed to make the human economy sustainable (1) improved efficiency (technical improvements, producing more with less, recycling) (2) reducing the human population explosion and (3) redistributing wealth from overconsumers to the world s poor. [Pg.1005]

The impact of the external drivers on the contemporary supply chain is discussed in depth in Chaps. 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. The evolution of supply chains driven by emerging paradigms such as humanitarian relief, emerging economies, sustainability, and healthcare delivery are elaborated in Chaps. 7, 8, 9 and 10. [Pg.11]

Economy of time and resources dictate using the smallest sized faciHty possible to assure that projected larger scale performance is within tolerable levels of risk and uncertainty. Minimum sizes of such laboratory and pilot units often are set by operabiHty factors not directly involving internal reactor features. These include feed and product transfer line diameters, inventory control in feed and product separation systems, and preheat and temperature maintenance requirements. Most of these extraneous factors favor large units. Large industrial plants can be operated with high service factors for years, whereas it is not unusual for pilot units to operate at sustained conditions for only days or even hours. [Pg.519]

Terminal Stream Compositions and Quantities These are basically linked to an arbitrary given the produc tion capacity of the leaching plant (rate of extrac t production or rate of raw-material purification by extrac tion). When options are permitted, the degree of solute remov and the concentration of the extrac t stream chosen are those that maximize process economy while sustaining conformance to regulatory standards. [Pg.1676]

During the OPEC years, auto fuel economy improved 7 percent/year. /ffiter correcting for the 40 percent increase in power, we see an adjusted gain from 1975 through 1997 of 4 percent/year. If the PNGV 3x car at 80 mpg is a significant fraction of the new car fleet by 2010, this rate of improvement will have been sustained for 35 years. [Pg.376]

Solar energy offers a clean, sustainable alternative to continued use of fossil fuels. In its various forms it is already providing useful amounts of energy on a global basis, and will provide steadily increasing amounts in the twenty-first century, especially as developing countries require more energy to improve their economies. [Pg.1062]

Another favorable aspect of these polymers is their conformity with the principles of green chemistry. The latter sets guidehnes for the chemical industry in order to secure sustainable development, while increasing process economy [3,4]. Briefly, green chemistry, and the related green engineering [5] call for an increase in, and/or upgrading of ... [Pg.105]

Environmental protection, Economic growth and social development known as three E s. The mission is to implement an environmentally friendly energy system. If we are to achieve sustainable development, we will need to display greater responsibility for energy, economy and environment. [Pg.97]

There was the rearmament. Then there were the country-to-country robberies, charged as separate crimes. Property is the wherewithal by which, with private or pubhc enterprise, a community sustains the life of its citizens. While we had proved the harm done the individual owners, our main purpose was to emphasize the exploitation of the conquered country s economies and the plunder of their industries. Then the cancerous production necessities of an ever-growing military machine, and the sheer lawlessness bred by the whole program of conquest, reached their pinnacle in enslavement, torture, and murder. [Pg.128]

The National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine suggested that an economic-environmental-social model be devised and employed for the purposes of the country s sustainable development. This is a very complex and time-consuming approach that may not be usable at this time of industrial restructuring, privatization and other involved processes occurring in a collapsed national economy. An alternative tactics is put forward, which is applicable at both national and regional level. Instead of mathematical modeling and optimization, it uses systems approach and decision theory techniques. [Pg.28]

There is an urgent need to find feasible ways that would stop the ensuing depopulation in Ukraine, such ways to ensure survival that would work before die sustainable development concept has been implemented. In these times of a deep economic crisis, the economic and environment-related issues must be attacked simultaneously, in line with one strategy for a cleaner economy. This would be a change from a policy of anthropogenic impact assessment to that of at-source abatement of pollution. [Pg.28]

These points are common to the Sustainable Development Concept and to the cleaner production concept. How could all that be funded It would be ridiculous to suggest that comprehensive actions towards a cleaner economy might be supported by the miserable national budget. There is even less reason to believe that any down-to-earth effort to upgrade some specific facility and implement advanced technologies and state-of-the-art equipment might be funded from it. Furthermore, we can hardly rely on the assistance from the West, and nobody here believes in assistance not backed by economic interest. [Pg.34]
