Early rusting

Of the BSt2 steel panels under atmospheric exposure ("Table II".) only the CR system shows early rust spots (6-12 months). After the first 3-6 months, rust blisters appear on the paint surface. Later these blister breaks due to accumulation of corrosion products inside them. 

Two special types of corrosion feiluie that occur exclusively with water-based coatings are flash and early rust. Both look similar and are often treated similarly in the literature. They are, however, caused by different mechanisms and although they occur under similar circiunstances they should be treated differently.

To prevent early rust, inhibitors are often added to the paint formulation. 

The harvest begins early in Se iii iiihei, when a red rust Or " SQuff appears on the leaves.. After some slight drying the planU are distilled (ur about sis hours. The oil-yield per acre ranges from H up to 2b Ih. 

Similar observations have been made in the United States, where a marked decrease in the rate of rusting has generally been observed after the early stages. For example, in one test, the total corrosion over the first two years was about 0-1 mm but the additional corrosion during the next 10 years was only about 0-06mm. These are slow rates of rusting, however, and it is possible that the rust formed was more protective than usual, because of the relatively non-aggressive test environment.

In India some of the early work was toward refinement of spraying to control leaf rust and the researchers started their studies with strong Bordeaux sprays. Munro and Sandararaman showed (46) that uncontrolled leaf disease reduced the coffee harvest very seriously, but that although 10-10-50 Bordeaux materially controlled the disease it depressed the fruit crop. With Bordeaux of formulas 5-5-50 or 2 -2 -50, the crop increase was one half to one third more than that produced under 10-10-50 Bordeaux or under no spray. 

Tupperware was the idea of Earl Silas Tupper, a New Hampshire tree surgeon and plastics innovator. He began experimenting with PE during the early part of World War II. In 1947, he designed and patented the famous Tupper seal that sealed in freshness. In order to close the container it had to be burped to remove air. Tupperware was also bug proof, spill proof, did not rot or rust, and did not break when dropped. Even with all of these advantages, few were sold. Enter Brownie Wise, a divorced single mother from Detroit who desperately needed to supplement her income as a secretary, who had the idea of Tupperware Parties. ...

Females begin to emit pheromone 9 or more days after the adult molt (Bodenstein, 1970 Takahashi et al., 1976 Hawkins and Rust, 1977), but clearly, this is variable and temperature dependent. The attractancy of gut extracts made on the first day after the imaginal molt corresponds to that of 0.1 ng ( )-periplanone-B (Sass, 1983). During the next 20 days, the effectiveness of both fractions of the sex pheromone (periplanone-A and periplanone-B) in behavioral assays increases 100-fold and remains high for at least the next 45 days. Collection of airborne pheromone with Tenax followed by behavioral assays showed that periplanone-A and periplanone-B were released by 10-25-day-old females in equal amounts, equivalent to 0.6 ng periplanone-B per female per day (Sass, 1983). Yang et al. (1998) confirmed an increase in pheromone activity in the early adult but showed a decline in pheromone between days 20 and 30.

Although this form of corrosion has been known for many years, the reported incidence (and therefore awareness) of white rust corrosion on new galvanized steel cooling towers has grown significantly since the late 1980s and early 1990s.
