Durability resistance

Nickel is a moderately lustrous, silvery metal, and is extensively used in alloys (for example coinage, stainless steel) and for plating where a durable resistant surface is required. It is also used as an industrial catalyst, for example in the hydrogenation of unsaturated organic compounds. It is attacked by dilute aqueous acids but not by alkalis it combines readily with many non-metals on heating. [Pg.406]

Escape Shorter crop growth period and/or early ripening to be able to avoid the critical infestation period, or to have enough yield before the infestation becomes too severe (potato/late blight onion/downy mildew carrot/carrot fly) One or more monofactorial and multifactorial, durable resistance traits against pest and disease affecting yield and/or quality (scab/apple, late blight/potato, lettuce/downy mildew, yellow and brown leaf rust/wheat) weed competition by an allelochemical ability... [Pg.127]

Systems that permit automatic regulation of the gas pressure in the box within present limits are preferable to those that do not. This feature can prevent accidents that may result from over- or underpressurizing the box. All-metal boxes with glass or plastic windows (Fig. 19.2) are generally better than allplastic boxes. Metal boxes offer the advantages of durability, resistance to chemical attack, and increased ease of modification. [Pg.572]

General-purpose type is a high pressure decorative laminate (HPDL) designed for both horizontal and vertical applications where appearance, durability, resistance to stains, and resistance to heat up to 135°C (275°F) are required. [Pg.536]

Carbon black is a black pigment, and lampblack, which has a larger particle size, is used for tinting to produce shades of gray. Carbon black is very opaque and has excellent durability, resistance to all types of chemicals, and light fastness. [Pg.145]

Today, a variety of and large amount of synthetic polymeric materials are produced and are supporting our comfortable daily life as well as modern high technologies. The major reasons for their success are their strength, durability, resistance to chemical and biological corrosion and low production cost. On the one hand these properties have created various fields of applications, but on the other have given rise to the problem of waste polymers. [Pg.771]

Dry-etching durable resists The real conflict requirement in positive electron resists exists in the relationship between dry-etching durability and sensitivity. Figure 2 depicts this situation. Clearly, aromatic polymers show high durability but low sensitivity (24) Poly(phenylmethacrylate) (PPhMA) withstands reactive sputter-etching more than 2 times longer than... [Pg.107]

Many organic solids can be coated on metals and other hard materials to form rubbing interfaces with low friction, but most of them do not meet the other criteria required of solid lubricants, such as durability, resistance to high temperatures, and low volatility. Only a handful of organic substances have been given serious consideration as solid lubricants pcA it, the behavior of which depends on the properties of macroscopic coatings as distinct from a.diOJibe.d of fatty acids,... [Pg.589]

The current concentration on the use of synthetic instead of natural fibrous materials stems from the desire to standardize the physical and mechanical characteristics of materials and to adapt them to the demands of the technical designers and users of membrane constructions. Above all, characteristics such as mechanical firmness, flexibility, workability, durability, resistance to UV radiation and chemicals, dirt resistance and cleaning behaviour, flammability, moisture stability and environmental compatibility determine the costs and therefore the choice of materials. [Pg.52]

As with common paving bitumens, the tests conducted on hard paving bitumens aim at determining their consistency at intermediate service temperatures (penetration test) and at elevated service temperatures (softening point and dynamic viscosity test) and their durability (resistance to hardening test). Kinematic viscosity, Fraass breaking point, flash point and solubility are also properties considered useful in the specification of hard paving bitumens. [Pg.104]

Tubular heating elements are extremely durable, resistant to contamination, and quite economical. They can be used on dies, radiant, thermoforming, and hot runner manifold applications. Tubular heaters provide temperatures up to 649°C and offer tremendous design flexibility. [Pg.254]

Their performance falls short of most present finishes, particularly in durability, resistance to chlorine-containing bleaches, and formaldehyde release, and they are not used much today. Both urea and formaldehyde are relatively inexpensive, and manufacture is simple ie, 1-2 mol of formaldehyde as an aqueous solution reacts with 1 mol of urea under mildly alkaline conditions at slightly elevated temperatures. [Pg.471]

Colorants that meet the performance requirements have to be chosen. Does the coating need to have exterior durability, resistance to solvents, resistance to chemicals such as acids and bases, resistance to heat, or meet some regulation for possible toxicity ... [Pg.1453]

Plastics are bonded to one another or to other materials. They differ widely in their affinity for bonding. Some plastics are easy to bond (e.g., PVC-U, ABS, PS), whereas others can be bonded only after special preparation (e.g., PTFE). On account of the low polarity and surface tension of certain plastics (e.g., polyolefins) there are still no adhesives for pipe joints which are durably resistant to shear strain and pressure. The choice of adhesive is determined by the substrate and the mechanical, thermal, and chemical requirements [69] - [75]. [Pg.64]
