In another commercial process, phthalic anhydride is converted to benzoic acid, in about an 85% yield, by hydrolysis in the presence of heat and chromium and disodium phthalates. [Pg.67]

The values of k bs at different [MX] (MX= sodium benzoate," sodium cinnamate, sodium 2-chlorobenzoate, sodium 4-methoxybenzoate, disodium phthalate, disodium isophthalate, disodium fumarate, and sodium sulfate"" ) for piperidinolysis of PS were found to fit to Equation 3.47, where Kx/s and k ... [Pg.228]

Phthalic anhydride and diethyl phthalate are easily converted with hydrazine into 4-hydroxyphthalazin-l(2/f)-one. Its substituted derivatives have been prepared using substituted hydrazines, substituted phthalic anhydrides, or diesters or disodium salts of substituted phthalic acids (Scheme 81). However, condensation of phenylhydrazine with phthalic anhydride gives only a small amount of the corresponding phthalazine, the main product being 2-anilinophthalimide. This can be rearranged in the presence of base into the phthalazine derivative. For the preparation of 2,3-disubstituted derivatives, 1,2-disub-stituted hydrazines are reacted with the appropriate phthalic anhydrides or phthaloyl chlorides. Derivatives of 4-amino- or 4-hydrazino-phthalazin-l(2iT)-one have been prepared either from the corresponding monothiophthalimide and 3-aminoisoindolin-3-one (1S4) or from ethyl 2-cyanobenzoate (155) and hydrazine hydrate (Scheme 82). Similarly,... [Pg.47]

The alternative commercial process for manufacturing quinacridones, the PPA process, also commences with DMSS 7 which is converted to 12 by acid-catalyzed reaction with the appropriate aromatic amines in water miscible alcohol solvents. Generally without isolation, the dihydrodiester 12 is oxidized by some of the agents described for the oxidation of the dihydroquinacridone 16 and hydrolyzed by base in the aqueous alcohol solvents to the water soluble disodium 2,5-diaryl-aminotere-phthalates that when acidified afford excellent yields of the corresponding 2,5-diaryl-aminoterephthalic acids 17. Typically this 3-stage synthesis is conducted as a 1-pot process [18] (Scheme 18.9). [Pg.300]
