Psoriasis is a common inflammatory skin disorder which is estimated to affect 1.5% to 3% of the Caucasian population.1,2 It may present at any age.3,4 Ethnic factors influence disease prevalence. In the United States, prevalence among blacks (0.45% to 0.7%) is lower than in the remainder of the United States population (1.4% to 4.6%).1 Between 10% and 30% of patients with psoriasis will also have psoriatic arthritis.5 In 10% to 15% of psoriatic patients with arthritis, joint symptoms actually appear prior to skin involvement.3 Clinical depression is another frequent comorbid illness in these patients. A recent United States survey showed that 8% to 10% of psoriatic patients aged 18 to 54 years old actively contemplated suicide because of their psoriasis.6... [Pg.950]

Von Willebrand disease (vWD) is the most common inherited bleeding disorder caused by a deficiency or dysfunction of von Willebrand factor. The disease prevalence is estimated at 30 to 100 cases per million. In contrast to hemophilia, vWD is inherited as an autosomal dominant disorder (although autosomal recessive cases exist), ensuing equal frequency in male and females.16... [Pg.992]

All the evidence we have examined suggests IP [intellectual property] hardly plays any role in stimulating R D on diseases prevalent in developing countries, except for those diseases where there is a large market in the developed world (e.g. diabetes or heart disease). (CIPR 2002)... [Pg.111]

Chagas disease prevalent in South and Central America, affecting 16-18 million people in 21 countries. Causes 13,000 deaths per year. Infection is often asymptomatic for years but can eventually cause fatal heart damage. Two drugs are available for treatment, but can have serious and frequent side-effects. Dengue fever more than one-third of the world s population are under threat from this mosquito-borne disease. Responsible tor 21,000 deaths per year. No specific treatment exists. [Pg.112]

PCP was developed primarily for use as a wood preservative but has also been used as an herbicide on pineapple and sugarcane plantations. It has also been employed as a molluscicide against schistosomiasis, a severe human parasitic disease prevalent in much of tropical Asia, Africa, and South America (Hutzinger et al. 1985). The major contaminant of commercial PCP is OCDD, which may be present at concentrations between 500 and 1,500 mg/kg (ppm) (Dobbs and Grant 1979 Miller et al. 1989a). PCP may also contain mixed isomers of HxCDD and HpCDD (Pereira et al. 1985). It is currently registered as a restricted-use pesticide for use as a wood preservative (Sine 1990). [Pg.420]

It is interesting to note that among 1393 new drugs developed between 1975 and 1999, only 1.1% (16 drugs) was for tropical and other diseases prevalent in developing countries (90). While one-third of the world population live on less than US 2/day, and occasionally without access to essential drugs (91), it is foreseeable that some may question... [Pg.29]

The two most severe types of ichthyosis, lamellar ichthyosis (LI) and epidermolytic hyperkeratosis (EHK), are distinct families of diseases with completely different etiologies (see Figure 8.1 and Table 8.3). Nevertheless, LI and EHK have several things in common they are rare, congenital diseases (prevalence <1/100,000) with more or less generalized hyperkeratosis and a defective skin barrier, and they usually demands vigorous therapy. [Pg.87]

Cross- sectional Design that simultaneously ascertains exposures and outcomes Appropriate for exploring research questions as a first attempt or to generate hypotheses for analytic study designs Can be completed in a relatively short period of time, often at reduced cost Useful initial approach for evaluating human health risks Disease prevalence only Cannot assess causality or the temporal relation between exposure and health outcome Residual confounding may threaten internal validity... [Pg.172]

A new synthesis of torreyol (183) based on an intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction has been reported (Scheme 30).A second synthesis of lacinilene C methyl ether (184), a constituent of cotton, has been published. This compound is thought to be responsible for byssinosis, a disease prevalent in the textile industry. [Pg.29]

The records of this office having conclusively proved that diseases prevalent in the Army may be treated as efficiently without tartar emetic as therewith, and the fact of its remaining upon the Supply Table being a tacit invitation to its use, tartar emetic is also stmck from the Supply Table of the Army. [Pg.257]
