Disease control activity

Large populations of rhizobacteria are usually present in file rhizosphere, mainly because of die ideal environmental conditions they encounter there due to a constant supply of nutrients provided through root exudates and lysates [58]. Many of the present strains exert a disease controlling activity simply by directly antagonizing soil-borne pathogens [59,60]. In order to investigate disease suppression conditioned by ISR, it is therefore important to spatially separate the bacteria fiom the roots. 

State intervention in man s activities to protect the health of the inhabitants goes back to prehistory. The motivation may not have been altogether altruistic the king acted to protect his subjects because he regarded them as his property. Public health protection began for disease control. Anthrax, a disease caused by infection by Bacillus anthracis via spores, can be transmitted to humans or animals ruminants such as sheep, goats, cattle, and deer are most susceptible. The handling of infected animals or animal products may also lead to human infection. Recently, anthrax has been considered to be a potential candidate for bioterrorism activity. The spores are extremely hardy and may come into contact with humans through a cut or abrasion, through consumption of infected meat, or by inhalation. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) lists anthrax as a category A disease, and the only vaccine that currently exists has a number of drawbacks and health risks. 

Azathioprine and 6-MP are important agents in the induction and maintenance of remission of ulcerative colitis and Crohn s disease. Although the optimal dose is uncertain, most patients with normal thiopurine-S-methyltransferase (TPMT) activity (see below) are treated with 6-MP, 1-1.5 mg/kg/d, or azathioprine, 2-2.5 mg/kg/d. After 3-6 months of treatment, 50-60% of patients with active disease achieve remission. These agents help maintain remission in up to 80% of patients. Among patients who depend on long-term glucocorticoid therapy to control active disease, purine analogs allow dose reduction or elimination of steroids in the majority. 

An important factor in the redistribution of fungicides throughout a target crop is their level of vapour phase activity. Compounds that are relatively immobile in the plant may be extensively redistributed through the vapour phase and effect commercially acceptable disease control. A good example is fenpropimorph.
