Dimethylamine salts

Cellulosic, polyester, and acrylic fibers lubricated with a surfactant-based oiling composition containing an organic phosphorus ester neutralized with an amine showed less pilling, good antistatic properties, and anticorrosiveness. The phosphorus ester salts were hexyl phosphate trimethylamine salt, dodecamethy-lene caproate phosphonate ethylamine salt, and polyethylene glycol dodecyl ether phosphate dimethylamine salt [262].

Table 5 is a more comprehensive compilation of the DMN content of some herbicides formulated as the dimethylamine salts (53). Five out of six formulations of 2,4-D contained DMN at levels of between 60 and 370 Pg/l. All four formulations of MCPA contained DMN at levels of between 250 and 650 yg/1. DMN levels of between 187,000 and 640,00 yg/1 were found in formulations of 2,3, 6-trichlorobenzoic acid which had been stored in metal cans to which sodium nitrite had been added. Table 5 represents a comparative study between an EPA laboratory and Thermo Electron. The decrease of the DMN level for any one compound reflects the success of the manufacturers in decreasing the DMN contamination (60).

The first material seriously considered as a candidate ripener for increasing sugar yields was the dimethylamine salt of 2,3,6-trichlorobenzoic acid. However, because of a number of technical, environmental, and legal proglems, this material did not prove successful commercially. Nevertheless, it served as a standard for comparison in screening tests aimed at finding better sugarcane ripeners.

Phenoxyalkanoic acids are formulated as esters and amine salts and chemical hydrolytic mechanisms are considered responsible for the rapid conversion of the phenoxyalkanoic esters to the corresponding phenoxy-alkanoic anion in moist soils ( 5). The dimethylamine salt of 2,4-D similarly undergoes chemical conversion in the soil, by dissociation, to the acid anion (5j. However, abiotic processes do not appear to result in any significant degradation of phenoxyalkanoic acids in the soil (5j. 

Dicamba in the form of its dimethylamine salt is a translocatable auxin-type herbicide, which by pre- or postemergence treatment, usually combined with one or more phenoxyalkanoic acids, is used for the control of grasses, broad-leaved weeds and several shrubs. In combinations mainly 2,4-D, MCPA, and mecoprop are used. Its recommended rate is 80-130 g a.e./ha. 

It is moderately toxic, the acute oral for rats, as for dimethylamine salt, being 1028 mg/kg. It is also only moderately toxic to wildlife and fish.

It is conveniently prepared by the interaction of 2-methyl-2-phenyl succinic acid with excess of 40% methylamine. The exeess of amine and water are distilled off under reduced pressure. The residue containing the dimethylamine salt of the acid is pyrolyzed at 250°C imtil no more distillate is obtained. The crude produet is dissolved in an appropriate solvent, treated with activated charcoal and finally precipitated by the addition of water. 

Centner (185) found that picloram in the K-salt form was vaporized from soils in amounts which were much more phytotoxic to bean plants than comparable levels of the dimethylamine salt of dicamba or the propylene glycol butyl ether esters of 2,4-D,...
