A range of bis(tetrachlorocatecholato)spirophosphoranides 91 and 92 have been prepared from diones <2002EJ03580>. Careful fine-tuning of the polarity of the solvent mixture was required for the precipitation of the dimethylammonium salts of the spirophosphoranides. The hioactive marine alkaloid eudistomin X (68) was first isolated in 2003 from a Micronesian collection of Eudistoma sp. and was known to have a chiral center that was not defined in the original report [72]. The eudistomins are derived from tryptophan/tryptamine condensation with another amino add. It is from this background that Copp et al. [73] undertook the estahhshment of the absolute configuration of eudistomin X. Following the synthesis, the authors employed 6 Hz H—HMBC spectra to confirm the structures of the free base (68), the dimethylammonium salt (69), and the disalt (70). The chemical shift behavior of the nitrogen resonances, which is shown in Table 9, was consistent with expectation for the free base and two salts (Scheme 7).

Consider the alkylation of ammonia with bromomethane. When this transformation is carried out with equimolar quantities of starting materials, the weakly acidic product (methylanunonium bromide), as soon as it is formed, (reversibly) donates a proton to the starting, weakly basic ammonia. The small quantities of methanamine generated in this way then compete effectively with the ammonia for the alkylating agent, and this further methylation generates a dimethylammonium salt.
