The cleaning process proceeds by one of three primary mechanisms solubilization, emulsification, and roll-up [229]. In solubilization the oily phase partitions into surfactant micelles that desorb from the solid surface and diffuse into the bulk. As mentioned above, there is a body of theoretical work on solubilization [146, 147] and numerous experimental studies by a variety of spectroscopic techniques [143-145,230]. Emulsification involves the formation and removal of an emulsion at the oil-water interface the removal step may involve hydrodynamic as well as surface chemical forces. Emulsion formation is covered in Chapter XIV. In roll-up the surfactant reduces the contact angle of the liquid soil or the surface free energy of a solid particle aiding its detachment and subsequent removal by hydrodynamic forces. The surfactant is initially distributed through three different locations dissolved as individual molecules or ions in the aqueous phase, at the surface of the monomer drops, and as micelles. The latter category holds most of the surfactant. Likewise, the monomer is located in three places. Some monomer is present as individual molecules dissolved in the water. Some monomer diffuses into the oily interior of the micelle, where its concentration is much greater than in the aqueous phase. This process is called solubilization. The third site of monomer is in the dispersed droplets themselves. Most of the monomer is located in the latter, since these drops are much larger, although far less abundant, than the micelles. Hydroxyhydroquinone and pyrogaHol can be used for lining reactors for vinyl chloride suspension polymerization to prevent formation of polymer deposits on the reactor walls (98). Hydroxyhydroquinone and certain of its derivatives are useful as auxiUary developers for silver haUde emulsions in photographic material their action is based on the dye diffusion-transfer process. Analysis of a method of maximizing the usefiilness of smaH pilot units in achieving similitude is described in Reference 67. The pilot unit should be designed to produce fully developed large bubbles or slugs as rapidly as possible above the inlet. UsuaHy, the basic reaction conditions of feed composition, temperature, pressure, and catalyst activity are kept constant. Constant catalyst activity usuaHy requires use of the same particle size distribution and therefore constant minimum fluidization velocity which is usuaHy much less than the superficial gas velocity. Mass transport from the bubble by diffusion may be less than by convective exchange between the bubble and the surrounding emulsion phase. [Pg.518]

Two kinds of barriers are important for two-phase emulsions the electric double layer and steric repulsion from adsorbed polymers. An ionic surfactant adsorbed at the interface of an oil droplet in water orients the polar group toward the water. The counterions of the surfactant form a diffuse cloud reaching out into the continuous phase, the electric double layer. When the counterions start overlapping at the approach of two droplets, a repulsion force is experienced. The repulsion from the electric double layer is famous because it played a decisive role in the theory for colloidal stabiUty that is called DLVO, after its originators Derjaguin, Landau, Vervey, and Overbeek (14,15). The theory provided substantial progress in the understanding of colloidal stabihty, and its treatment dominated the colloid science Hterature for several decades. [Pg.199]

In suspension processes the fate of the continuous liquid phase and the associated control of the stabilisation and destabilisation of the system are the most important considerations. Many polymers occur in latex form, i.e. as polymer particles of diameter of the order of 1 p.m suspended in a liquid, usually aqueous, medium. Such latices are widely used to produce latex foams, elastic thread, dipped latex rubber goods, emulsion paints and paper additives. In the manufacture and use of such products it is important that premature destabilisation of the latex does not occur but that such destabilisation occurs in a controlled and appropriate manner at the relevant stage in processing. Such control of stability is based on the general precepts of colloid science. As with products from solvent processes diffusion distances for the liquid phase must be kept short furthermore, care has to be taken that the drying rates are not such that a skin of very low permeability is formed whilst there remains undesirable liquid in the mass of the polymer. For most applications it is desirable that destabilisation leads to a coherent film (or spongy mass in the case of foams) of polymers. To achieve this the of the latex compound should not be above ambient temperature so that at such temperatures intermolecular diffusion of the polymer molecules can occur. [Pg.181]

The effectiveness of a fluidized bed as a ehemical reactor depends to a large extent on the amount of convective and diffusive transfer between bubble gas and emulsion phase, since reaction usually occurs only when gas and solids are in contact. The water solubilities of the functional comonomers are reasonably high since they are usually polar compounds. Therefore, the initiation in the water phase may be too rapid when the initiator or the comonomer concentration is high. In such a case, the particle growth stage cannot be suppressed by the diffusion capture mechanism and the solution or dispersion polymerization of the functional comonomer within water phase may accompany the emulsion copolymerization reaction. This leads to the formation of polymeric products in the form of particle, aggregate, or soluble polymer with different compositions and molecular weights. The yield for the incorporation of functional comonomer into the uniform polymeric particles may be low since some of the functional comonomer may polymerize by an undesired mechanism. [Pg.216]
