Values reported for diethyl phthalate range from 1.4 to 3.3 (5,10,14). Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate ranges from 4.2 to 7.60 (5,12,14). HSDB reported a logK value of 3 to 4 for diisooctyl phthalate whereas Staples et al. proposed a value of 8.0 for this plasticizer. No values were located for di-(2-ethylhexyl) adipate, di-n-octyl adipate, tri-(2-ethylhexyl) trimellitate and dibutyl sebacate. 

Commercially used plasticizers such as di n-octyl adipate, di -octyl sebacate, di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate and butyl benzyl phthalate can contribute to the photo-dehydrochlorination of poly(vinyl chloride) and this is attributed to a free radical mechanism, whereby a radical is first formed in the plasticizer and then transferred to the polymer [255, 297, 298, 688, 1636, 2270]. In the case ofdi(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate and tri(2-ethylhexyl)trimellitate the observed effects are even more drastic under conditions of solar irradiation [554]. This effect has been attributed to the fact that the trimellitate exhibits a much greater absorption in the wavelength range of the solar spectrum and hence is more likely to form free radicals.

Plasticised PVC may sometimes seem a misnomer, as the plasticiser content can occasionally be greater than the PVC. Plasticisation also reduces chemical resistance and increases gas and moisture permeation. Typical plasticisers used include adipates, citrates, sebacates, phosphates and phthalates, e.g. di-iso-octyl adipate, acetyl-tri-n butylcitrate, di-octyl phthalate (DOP). Polymeric plasticisers and urethanes are also used. Plasticised PVCs are soft and very flexible (see IV bag usage).

The method fails for vinyl acetate, ieri.-butyl acetate, n-octadecyl propionate, ethyl and >i-butyl stearate, phenyl, benzyl- and guaicol-acetate, methyl and ethyl cinnamate, diethyl sulphate and ethyl p-aminobenzoate.
