Hexyl alcohol, a mixture of n- and iso C6 alcohols made via the oxo process by Exxon Chemical Co., started the flow of new monohydric alcohols as intermediates for PVC plasticizers in the sixties. Dihexyl phthalate - the phthalate of this alcohol - is a fast solvator and competes with other fast solvating types in markets such as vinyl flooring and carpet backing. [Pg.188]

Only in exceptional short-lived applications are volatile plasticizers useful. Certain dihexyl phthalates are sufficiently low in volatility to be satisfactory for use in noncritical applications. Volatility loss from vinyl compositions is directly related to a plasticizer s vapor pressure and oxidation resistance. These are dependent upon molecular weight and structure. The effect of molecular structure can be illustrated with two isomeric dioctyl phthalates. Figure 16 shows that the straight chain ester with half the volatility confers much improved low-temperature flexibility compared with the branched structure. [Pg.631]

Suitable samples for reversed-phase columns packed with C, , C, phenyl, or hexyl packings are aromatic hydrocarbons such as toluene, xylene, cumene, naphthalene, acenaphthene, and anthracene and long-chain phthalates such as dihexyl phthalate or dioctyl phthalate. These samples give large retention factors and symmetric peaks with acetonitrile/water mobile phases of high acetonitrile content Typical mobile phases contain 50-70% acetonitrile. The... [Pg.260]

PP packaging films are nsually printed on their surfaces (e.g., in confectionery and snack food prodncts packaging). In this case however, the transfer of ink components can occnr from the onter printed surface of the film onto the inner food contact snrfaces. If there are plasticisers like dihexyl phthalate (DHP) [or bis-w-butyl phthalate (DBP), or di-2-ethyl hexyl phthalate (DEHP)] in the ink, up to 6% of the DHP can migrate to the food immediately (or 6.7 mg/kg for 180 days storage of a chocolate/confectionery product), the proportion increasing with storage time. [Pg.76]
