Developing Identification Numbers

The record of an experiment should begin with a brief statement of the experiment to be performed. The procedure being followed should be described in all essential detail. When the procedure is described elsewhere, the notebook entry may be abbreviated to a reference to the pubhshed description. However, be certain to record any variations from the published procedure and to specify the apparatus that was used (make and model for commercial equipment, otherwise a sketch). If various pieces of equipment have identification numbers or serial numbers, these should be recorded. Note also any date of modification for apparatus. Include any calibration constants or calibration curves that are provided. For each chemical substance used, record the name, formula, source, grade or stated purity, and concentration (in case of a solution). If you have developed a checklist or work plan for the experiment, record this in your notebook also. [Pg.8]

Numeration systems are used to identify people and property, because they preserve confidentiality, increase security, and minimize errors caused when there are many people with the same name or many identical objects in the same production run in a factory assembly line. There are thousands of people named John Jones, and even if John Jones uses his middle initial, he can still be confused with another John Jones with the same initial. Thus numeration systems are developed for credit cards, social security cards, bank accounts, serial numbers for products, and other reasons. These identification numbers might be very long to defeat a criminal who is randomly guessing at numbers in order to steal from someone s bank account or credit card account. [Pg.611]

The design engineer should develop the habit of setting out calculations so that they can be easily understood and checked by others. It is good practice to include on calculation sheets the basis of the calculations, and any assumptions and approximations made, in sufficient detail for the methods, as well as the arithmetic, to be checked. One question still remains Why do many identification number systems still use check digit schemes that do not catch all of the errors listed in Table 1.2 This is a good question for which I have no answer. However, it does motivate the need to adjust current schemes and to create new ones. All of the concepts introduced in this book can be applied to create sophisticated schemes that will catch most errors. This was demonstrated by the Verhoeff scheme. With the birth of new identification number systems and the existence of old and ineffective check digit schemes, innovative schemes must be developed to ensure that data and information continue to flow error-free. [Pg.162]
