Better Than Nothing

In reality, psychiatry can claim to be like medicine, but it cannot prove it. It can claim that depression or schizophrenia is like diabetes or cancer, but it can offer no evidence. There are no known biological and physical bases for the range of commonly diagnosed psychiatric problems, from attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. 

What is needed To begin with, mental health professionals, physicians, and the public must become more skeptical, perhaps even cynical, and certainly more sophisticated about what psychiatric drugs and electroshock really do to the brain, mind, and person. Awareness of medication spellbinding and the brain-disabling principles of psychiatric treatment is key to this understanding. Psychiatric drugs do not cure mental disorders. Instead, their primary or essential effect is to cause brain dysfunction and compromise mental and emotional acuity.

If your employers will not let you publish an accident report under your own name, perhaps they will let you send it to a journal that will publish it anonymously, for example, the Loss Prevention Bulletin (see Recommended Reading), or perhaps they will let you publish details of the action you took as a result. This may not have the same impact as the report, but it is a lot better than nothing (see Section 8.1.5). 

In the meantime, while management, labor, and scientists work to improve the system, this is the best we ve got, and it s certainly a lot better than nothing. 

Eye protection must be worn at all times. Safety goggles are the ultimate safety glasses with side shields are acceptable prescription glasses are better than nothing, but should be worn with goggles hard and soft contact lenses are useless. 

Some examples include evaluation of uncertainty components associated with published values (i.e., the analyst did not measure them), uncertainties in a certificate of a certified reference material, manufacturer s statements about the accuracy of an instrument, or perhaps even personal experience. The latter could be viewed as an opportunity for anyone to just make up an uncertainty, but experience does count for something, and it is indeed usually better than nothing. Leaving out a component because of lack of exact knowledge immediately underestimates the uncertainty. 

The first commercial antiperspirant was Everdry, launched in 1902, and it was dabbed under the armpits using cotton wool. It was cold to apply, took time to dry, and was acidic, so that it irritated the skin and rotted clothes - but it was better than nothing. It contained aluminium chloride hexahydrate and later - urea was added to reduce the acidity. In 1934 Arid Cream was launched and it had been developed... 

Report amounts Even a rough measure such as a flat spoonful is better than nothing. 

The laboratory should be equipped with a conveniently accessible safety shower and an eyewash fountain there should be more than one of each in a large laboratory. Increasingly, the fixed type of eyewash fountain is being superseded by a spray nozzle at the end of an extensible hose there should be one of these on each laboratory bench. In lieu of such devices—or in addition to them—2- or 3-ft lengths of rubber hose (not small-bore pressure tubing) attached with wire or clamps to water faucets are certainly better than nothing. 

This analysis, though better than nothing, is not nearly so informative as that of Table 12.7. Table 12.8 is completely unable to give any infoimadoa on the TOSsible X Y interaction. With Table 12.7 we of csourse have to pool the smaller terms Xq, Yq, Xl Yq, Xq Yl, and against this Xl Yl is foimd to be significant. 

Prior to the 1970 s,the following were the most popular materials for use as armor in light vehicles. Although not as desirable as the newer products outlined in section these materials are certainly better than nothing. They should be used whenever the current exotic materials are not available. 

The moral of the story As with most things virtual, a swap file is not nearly as good as actual RAM, but it is better than nothing ... 

In the best situation, a fairly representative validation set of compounds (external validation set), for which predicted response values can be compared with actual ones, should be available. However, for the obvious reasons of time and cost, adequate validation sets are rarely available. As Swante Wold said Without a real validation set, a simulated one may be better than nothing. [Wold, 1991]. 

Tai chi and qigong are offered in classes across North America, or you can pick up a book or video to learn how to do them. Most sessions are well under an hour, and you can adjust them to fit your time constraints. A few minutes a day is better than nothing. 

What if no one thought to look at a clock when you were born First, keep in mind that an approximate time is better than nothing — much better. If all you know is that you came into this world before breakfast or during the Late Show with David Letterman, that s useful information, even if it s not exact. 

Use a well-fitting face (breathing) mask rated for toxic dusts . Masks rated for nuisance dusts are better than nothing but do not offer sufficient protection. If there is significant dust in the air, the mask should cover the eyes, as well. 

One sometimes encounters this claim, but it is illogical. As John Tukey put it, Adjustments are not expected to be perfect - they are only supposed to help (Tukey, 1993, p. 273). Suppose that the true relationship between covariate and outcome is some nonlinear function. It is extremely likely that a linear approximation to this relationship will be better than nothing. One can always regret the fact that the adjustment that has been carried out is less than perfect, but as an approximation to the truth a linear adjustment is likely to be better than nothing. Hence, imperfection in adjustment cannot be grounds for rejecting adjustment altogether. 

Different identification number systems use different check digit schemes. Some are more effective than others. Given that single-digit errors and transposition-of-adjacent-digits errors account for almost 90% of all errors (see Table 1.2), any scheme that is developed should at the very least catch these two types of errors. Some of the simpler schemes, while better than nothing, do not even do this. 

An element with an unknown atomic weigjit need then only have its specific heat measured, and at once one obtains an at least rough idea as to what its atomic weight is. This method worked only for solid elements, and not for every one of them, but it was better than nothing.
