FIGURE 3.14 Soap combined with water will form a variety of lyotropic phases. Dilute soap in water uses the micellar phase to clean, but if the soap is too dilute, it will not be effective. The concentrated soapy goop in the bottom of your soap dish is probably hexagonal or lamellar phase.

Schulze [51] described an extensive study on C12-C14 ether carboxylic acid sodium salt (4.5 mol EO) in terms of surface tension, critical micelle concentration (CMC), wetting, detergency, foam, hardness stability, and lime soap dispersing properties. He found good detergent effect compared to the etho-xylated C16-C18 fatty alcohol (25 mol EO) independent of CaCl2 concentration, there was excellent soil suspending power, low surface tension, and fewer Ca deposits than with alkylbenzenesulfonate. 

Because of their preferential use as detergents, the main interest in the physicochemical properties of the salts of a-sulfo fatty acid esters is related to their behavior in aqueous solution and at interfaces. In principle these are surface-active properties of general interest like micelle formation, solubility, and adsorption, and those of interest for special applications like detergency, foaming, and stability in hard water.

Surfactants Soluble compounds which possess groups of opposite polarity and solubilizing tendencies. They can form oriented monolayers at phase interfaces, form micelles, and possess detergency, foaming, wetting, emulsifying, and dispersing properties.

Summary Organomodified trisiloxanes show remarkable surface activity. Thus they can be used as additives in detergents, foaming agents or agrochemicals. However, this class of compounds has a limited range of applications, since it is susceptible to hydrolytic decomposition in aqueous solution. The hydrolysis occurs at the silicon-oxygen-bonds present within the molecules. Recently, a new class of silane surfactants free of Si-0-bonds has been developed. These silane surfactants proved to be hydrolytically stable even under extreme pH. Furthermore they exhibit surfactant properties comparable to those typical of trisiloxane surfactants. 

Use Surfactant and anionic detergent, foaming, wetting, and emulsifying agent.
