With the present major emphasis on the preparation and testing of a seemingly endless number of synthetic organic compounds for pesticidal activity and the clamor over their possible adverse effects on public health and our general environment, comparatively few people realize that certain natural insecticides have been used by man for centuries. The ancient Romans apparently utilized false hellebore as a rodenticide and insecticide (13), and preparations of Tripterygium ivilfordii (thunder-god vine) and Derris species have been employed by the Chinese for hundreds of years as insecticides (16). The insecticidal properties of sabadilla (from Schoenocaulon species) were known in the sixteenth century tobacco was in use as... [Pg.6]

Rotenone is a complex flavonoid found in the plant Derris ellyptica. It acts by inhibiting electron transport in the mitochondrion. Derris powder is an insecticidal preparation made from the plant, which is highly toxic to hsh. [Pg.7]

A systematic investigation of the free amino acids of the Leguminosae led to the isolation of a novel ninhydrin-positive compound from the leaves of Derris elliptica Benth. (Papilionidae) (93). This substance was analyzed as C6H,3N04 (microanalysis and high resolution mass spectrometry) and was shown to be an amino alcohol. The absence of a carbonyl in the 1R, the loss of 31 mass units in the mass spectrum, and a positive periodate cleavage reaction were best embodied into a dihydroxydihydroxymethylpyrrolidine structure. The relative simplicity of the NMR spectra (three peaks in the 13C spectrum four spin-system in the H spectrum) pointed out a symmetrical structure. Inasmuch as the material was optically active ([a]D 56.4, c = 7, H20), meso structures were ruled out, and the 2R, 3R, 4R, 5R relative configuration was retained (93). This structure (53) was further confirmed by an X-ray determination (94). [Pg.294]

Animals repeatedly fed derris power (a botanical source containing 9.6% rotenone) at levels from 312 to 5000 ppm developed focal liver necrosis and mild kidney damage. The oral LDso values vary greatly depending on particle size, manner of dispersion, activity of sample, and species tested. Values ranging from 25mg/kg in rats to more than 3000mg/kg in rabbits have been reported. ... [Pg.621]
