In milk fat, cholesterol is associated with Hpoproteins in the milk fat globule. It is also a component of animal membranes and controls rigidity and permeabihty of the membranes. Cholesterol has interesting surface properties and can occur in Hquid crystalline forms. Plants contain sterols such as P-sitosterol [83-46-5] (4b) or stigmasterol [83-48-7] (4c). Their functions in plant metaboHsm are not yet well understood. Analysis of sterols has proven useful for detection of adulteration of edible fats (9). [Pg.124]

The solvent is 28 CC-olefins recycled from the fractionation section. Effluent from the reactors includes product a-olefins, unreacted ethylene, aluminum alkyls of the same carbon number distribution as the product olefins, and polymer. The effluent is flashed to remove ethylene, filtered to remove polyethylene, and treated to reduce the aluminum alkyls in the stream. In the original plant operation, these aluminum alkyls were not removed, resulting in the formation of paraffins (- 1.4%) when the reactor effluent was treated with caustic to kill the catalyst. In the new plant, however, it is likely that these aluminum alkyls are transalkylated with ethylene by adding a catalyst such as 60 ppm of a nickel compound, eg, nickel octanoate (6). The new plant contains a caustic wash section and the product olefins still contain some paraffins ( 0.5%). After treatment with caustic, cmde olefins are sent to a water wash to remove sodium and aluminum salts. [Pg.439]

An ethylene plant contains more than 300 equipment items. Traditionally, operators were trained at the site alongside experienced co-workers. With the advent of modem computers, the plant operation can be simulated on a real-time basis, and the results displayed on monitors (107). Computers are used in a modem plant to control the entire operation, eg, they are used to control the heaters and the recovery section (108). A weU-controUed plant is much more profitable than a poorly controlled plant. For the heaters, a model-based control system is gaining importance (109). Instead of simply controlling the coil outlet temperature (COT), severity is actually controlled. The measurement of severity (either or C H /CH ratio) requires on-line effluent... [Pg.444]

The historical data is sampled at user-specified intervals. A typical process plant contains a large number of data points, but it is not feasible to store data for all points at all times. The user determines if a data point should be included in the list of archive points. Most systems provide archive-point menu displays. The operators are able to add or delete data points to the archive point hsts. The samphng periods are normally some multiples of their base scan frequencies. However, some systems allow historical data samphng of arbitraiy intei vals. This is necessaiy when intermediate virtual data points that do not have the scan frequency attribute are involved. The archive point lists are continuously scanned bv the historical database software. On-line databases are polled for data. The times of data retrieval are recorded with the data ootained. To consei ve storage space, different data compression techniques are employed by various manufacturers. [Pg.773]

Sulfur Dioxide, Spray Towers Flue gases and offgases from sulfuric acid plants contain less than 0.5 percent SO9 smelter gases like those from ore processing plants may contain 8 percent. The high-concentration streams are suitable for the manufacture of sulfuric acid. The low concentrations usually are regarded as contaminants to be destroyed or recovered as elemental siilfur by, for example, the Claus process. [Pg.2110]

Polycaprolactones (see also Section 25.11), although available since 1969, have only recently been marketed for biodegradable purposes. Applications include degradable film, tree planting containers and slow-release matrices for pharmaceuticals, pesticides, herbieides and fertilisers. Its rate of biodegradability is said to be less than that of the polylactides. [Pg.883]

Methods for the isolation and estimation of the alkaloids of the root are described. The seeds of the plant contain alkaloids giving colour reactions different from those of the root alkaloids. [Pg.768]

Inula royleana D.C. According to Chopra, Kohli and Handa, this plant contains about 3 per cent, of an alkaloid, royline, C2iH3gOgN, m.p. 120-1°, — 42-5° aurichloride, m.p. 142° (dec.). The base produces... [Pg.775]

Isotoma longiflora. This Peruvian plant contains an alkaloid, m.p. 190°, forming a hydrochloride, m.p. 160°. Pharmacological results are recorded and it is suggested that the alkaloid resembles lobeline of which it may be a derivative (Sanchez, Rev. Med. expU, (Peru), 1945, 4, 284 Chem. Abstr., 1948, 42, 1350). [Pg.775]

Monniera cuneifolia Michx. (Herpestis monniera HB and K. (Scro-phulariaceae). The plant contains alkaloids, of which the chief item, herpestine, has been obtained crystalline. It has the formula C34H4gOjN2, m.p. 116-8°, is diacidic and forms the following salts sulphate, dec. 120°, tartrate, m.p. 209-210°, platinichloride, dec. from 242°, aurichloride, m.p. 210-3° (dec.) (Basu and Walia, Ind. J. Pharm., 1944, 6, 85, 91 Basu and Pabrai, Quart. J. Pharm. Pharmacol., 1947, 20, 137). [Pg.776]

Asarum europeum L. According to Abdul menev, the root of this plant contains 1-7 per cent, of imcharacterised alkaloid, asarine. The root produces in frogs, rabbits and dogs, acceleration of respiration, nausea and emesis the cardiac activity of the leaves is thought to be due to a glucoside. The most prevalent steroid in animal cells is cholesterol (Figure 25.30). Plants contain no cholesterol, but they do contain other steroids very similar to cholesterol in structure (see page 256). Cholesterol serves as a crucial component of cell membranes and as a precursor to bile acids (e.g., cholate, glycocholate,... [Pg.832]
