L. alumen, alum) The ancient Greeks and Romans used alum as an astringent and as a mordant in dyeing. In 1761 de Morveau proposed the name alumine for the base in alum, and Lavoisier, in 1787, thought this to be the oxide of a still undiscovered metal. [Pg.31]

Filtration is the separation of two phases, particulate form, ie, soHd particles or Hquid droplets, and continuous, ie, Hquid or gas, from a mixture by passing the mixture through a porous medium. This article discusses the more predominant separation of soHds from Hquids. Filtration of soHd particles or Hquid droplets from gases is dealt with elsewhere (see Airpollution controlmethods). The oldest recorded appHcations of filtration are the purifications of wine and water practiced by the ancient Greeks and Romans. The use of the various tempera and of wax has been identified on objects dating back to ancient Egypt. The Eayum mummy portraits are beautiful examples of encaustic painting, ie, using molten wax as medium. A rather special variation was the technique used by the Romans for wall paintings. The collection and use of lac by Indian aboriginal tribes probably predates recorded history. Ancient Greek and Roman writers were aware of lac. By the late fifteenth century, European craftsmen were attracted to the use of lac as a finish for cabinets and other furniture because of its gloss and luster. [Pg.141]

Tin [7440-31 -5] is one of the world s most ancient metals. When and where it was discovered is uncertain, but evidence points to tin being used in 3200—3500 BC. Ancient bron2e weapons and tools found in Ur contained 10—15 wt % tin. In 79 ad, Pliny described an alloy of tin and lead now commonly called solder (see Solders and brazing alloys). The Romans used tinned copper vessels, but tinned iron vessels did not appear until the fourteenth century in Bohemia. Tinned sheet for metal containers and tole (painted) ware made its appearance in England and Saxony about the middle of the seventeenth century. Although tinplate was not manufactured in the United States until the early nineteenth century, production increased rapidly and soon outstripped that in all other countries (1). [Pg.56]

Another ancient dye is the deep blue indigo [482-89-3], the presence of two bromine atoms at positions gives the dye Tyrian purple [19201 -53-7] once laboriously extracted from certain sea shells and worn by Roman emperors. [Pg.419]

Juglone [481-39-0] (Cl Natural Brown 7 Cl 75500) was isolated from the husks of walnuts in 1856 (50). Juglone belongs to the Juglandaceae family of which there are a number of species Jug/ans cinerea (butter nuts), J. regia (Persian walnuts), and J. nigra (black walnuts). Persian walnuts were known to the ancient Romans who brought them over from Asia Minor to Europe. As early as 1664, the American colonists knew how to extract the brown dye from the nuts of the black walnut and butternut trees, both native to eastern North America (51). [Pg.397]

Tyrian Purple was the most expensive and rare dye of the ancient world principally because only a small amount of dye could be obtained from each moUusk, roughly 0.12 mg (95). It was always considered a color of distinction and restricted to regal and ecclesiastical uses ia the Eastern Roman Empire, the heir to the throne at By2antium bore the proud name Porphjro-Genitur, bom to the purple. The Hebrews used purple ia many decorations of the Tabernacle (23). [Pg.401]

The yellow dye curcumin, [458-37-7] (Cl Natural Ye//oii> 3 Cl 75300) (41), also known as tumeric, occurs in the roots of the plant Curcuma tinctoria found growing wild in Asia. The dye was well known to the ancient Romans and Greeks who used it to dye wool, cotton, and silk. The dye is an oil-soluble bright yellow material, and is the only natural yellow dye that requires no mordant. It finds use as a colorant for baked goods such as cakes. [Pg.404]

Saffron is found in the pistils of the plant Crocus sativus. Saffron is often confused with safflower, sometimes known as bastard saffron. The name of the plant. Crocus sativus, comes from the Arabic word faran, meaning yellow. The Romans and the Greeks used saffron not only as a dye but also as a spice. In the early days of Greece, yellow was the official color, and Grecian women were especially fond of clothes dyed with saffron. Because of its scarcity, saffron ranked among the most expensive dyes of the ancient world. [Pg.405]

The word "composites" has a modern ring. But using the high strength of fibres to stiffen and strengthen a cheap matrix material is probably older than the wheel. The Processional Way in ancient Babylon, one of the lesser wonders of the ancient world, was made of bitumen reinforced with plaited straw. Straw and horse hair have been used to reinforce mud bricks (improving their fracture toughness) for at least 5000 years. Paper is a composite so is concrete both were known to the Romans. And almost all natural materials which must bear load - wood, bone, muscle - are composites. [Pg.263]

With the fall of the Roman Empire, the ancient water supplies petered out. In early medieval times, people were content to conduct local water in wooden pipes to public cisterns. The first wooden pipelines for water were laid at Liibeck about 1293 and in 1365 at Nuremberg. In 1412 the Augsburg master builder Leopold Karg first used wrought-iron pipes in conjunction with wooden pipes to supply water. Because of their propensity to corrosion, they seem to have proved a failure and a few years later they were exchanged for wooden, lead, and cast-iron pipes. [Pg.3]

The attraction of rubbed amber and some other effects of electricity were known in ancient times. We know from finding nails in an old wreck that the Romans knew about contact corrosion combined with electric current flow. A skin of lead as a protection against boring worms covered the wooden planks of the ship and was nailed down with copper nails. Galvanic coupIe.s formed between the lead and the copper nails and the less noble lead sheets around the nails corroded in the seawater and fell off. The shipbuilders discovered a simple solution and covered the heads of the copper nails with lead as well. Galvanic current flow between the two metals was eliminated and corrosion was prevented (26). [Pg.10]

The use of hydraulics is not new. The Egyptians and people of ancient Persia, India and China conveyed water along channels for irrigation and other domestic purposes. They used dams and sluice gates to control the flow and waterways to direct the water to where it was needed. The ancient Cretins had elaborate plumbing systems. Archimedes studied the laws of floating and submerged bodies. The Romans constructed aqueducts to carry water to their cities. [Pg.585]

With the present major emphasis on the preparation and testing of a seemingly endless number of synthetic organic compounds for pesticidal activity and the clamor over their possible adverse effects on public health and our general environment, comparatively few people realize that certain natural insecticides have been used by man for centuries. The ancient Romans apparently utilized false hellebore as a rodenticide and insecticide (13), and preparations of Tripterygium ivilfordii (thunder-god vine) and Derris species have been employed by the Chinese for hundreds of years as insecticides (16).
