The properties of straight run diesel fuels depend on both nature of the crude oil and selected distillation range. Adiponitnle (hexanedinitnle, dicyanobutane, ADN), NC(CH2)4CN, is manufactured principally for use as an intermediate for hexamethylenediarnine (1,6-diaminohexane), which is a principal ingredient for nylon-6,6. However, in 1996, BASF aimounced the development of a process to make caprolactam from adiponitrile (44,45). Caprolactam is used to produce nylon-6. Each of the elements has a number of isotopes (2,4), all radioactive and some of which can be obtained in isotopicaHy pure form. Chlorine is produced as a gas that is used captively, transferred to customers via pipeline, or Hquefied. Liquid chlorine, of higher purity than gaseous chlorine, is either used internally by the producers or marketed. The percentage of U.S. chlorine gas production subsequently Hquefied has increased over the past ten years reflecting higher demand for high purity chlorine. This percentage was 60.7% in 1978 and 81.1% in 1987 (5). The majority of this chlorine is consumed captively. [Pg.478]

United States Caustic Soda Production. In 1987 U.S. production of caustic soda increased to 10.4 million tons (fig. 1), more than 10% over that of the previous year, furthermore, 1988 production was up another 6.7% to 11.1 million tons. The demand for caustic soda has been very strong in recent years as evidenced by both increased U.S. consumption and a strong export demand. In 1987 the United States exported 1.5 million tons, 14.5% of the total caustic soda production (6), representing a 25.5% increase over exports in 1986. Then, in 1988, caustic soda exports grew by another 4.1%. A weak doUar helped boost the 1987 exports. Growth slowed in 1988, however, as a result of an industry (and world) wide caustic soda shortage, which was caused by lower U.S. chlorine consumption and forced allocations. Because industries switched from caustic to soda ash where possible, the lower 1988 export growth was not indicative of caustic soda s export potential. [Pg.478]

Sodium Hydroxide. Before World War 1, nearly all sodium hydroxide [1310-93-2], NaOH, was produced by the reaction of soda ash and lime. The subsequent rapid development of electrolytic production processes, resulting from growing demand for chlorine, effectively shut down the old lime—soda plants except in Eastern Europe, the USSR, India, and China. Recent changes in chlorine consumption have reduced demand, putting pressure on the price and availabiHty of caustic soda (NaOH). Because this trend is expected to continue, there is renewed interest in the lime—soda production process. EMC operates a 50,000 t/yr caustic soda plant that uses this technology at Green River it came onstream in mid-1990. Other U.S. soda ash producers have aimounced plans to constmct similar plants (1,5). [Pg.527]

The food producing industry has responded to consumer demand for foods with lower fat content (Table 1). Foods with low or no cholesterol claims leaped 78% from 1980 to 1990, in spite of the fact that many of the principal food producers reduced the amount of new product introductions during 1989 and 1990 (7). Table 2 indicates the change in the market for various food industry segments, especially those suspected as fat problem generators, including dairy and meat foods. However, the number of companies using fermentation to produce therapeutic substances and/or fine chemicals number well over 150, and those that grow microorganisms for food and feed number nearly 100. Lists of representative fermentation products produced commercially and the corresponding companies are available (1). Numerous other companies practice fermentation in some small capacity because it is often the only route to synthesize biochemical intermediates, enzymes, and many fine chemicals used in minor quantities. The large volume of L-phenylalanine is mainly used in the manufacture of the artificial dipeptide sweetener known as aspartame [22389-47-0]. Prior to the early 1980s there was httle demand for L-phenyl alanine, most of which was obtained by extraction from human hair and other nonmicrobiological sources. [Pg.178]

United States Imports of Spices and Oleoresins. The consumption of spices has continued to increase in the United States into 1993 (7). The demand for ethnic foods, and the trend toward less salt, glycerides, and fat, has stimulated more spice and condiment use. The United States consumes approximately 25% of the spices produced in the world. In 1993, imports accounted for about 65% of U.S. seasoning needs compared to 80% in the early 1980s. In 1991 approximately 50% by value of U.S. imported spices entered New York, the principal port of entry around 1983 more than 75% was imported through this port. The volume of spices and oleoresins (spice extracts) into the United States has been increasing steadily, but the value of imports has varied because of specific shortages and large price variations (Table 1). [Pg.24]
