Decontamination wastes

Performance of the unit has proven to be dependent on the level of decontamination required and on the type of coating covering the decontamination. Wastes recovered by this process may require additional treatment or disposal as radioactive, mixed, or hazardous wastes. 

Caution o-Xylylene dibromide is a powerful and persistent lachrymator. The preparation and all subsequent handling of this substance should, therefore, be carried out in an efficient hood with adequate protection by rubber gloves. A gas mask should be at hand for emergency. All apparatus coming in contact with the dibromide should be immersed in alcoholic alkali contained in a large crock with a lid. A period of 24 hours is sufficient for decontamination. Waste substances stick as filter paper and corks usually require several days of such soaking before they can be safely discarded. 

A lthough the levels of plutonium in environmental waters are generally - low, there is the possibility of plutonium contamination from weapons testing, nuclear reactor operations, laundry and decontamination wastes, fuel reprocessing, and accidental release during transportation. It has been estimated that by 1980 the United States will be producing 15,000-20,000 kg. of plutonium per year (12). Its growing use will increase the probability of environmental contamination.

Thermal treatment processes use energy to destroy or decontaminate waste. These technologies include low or high energy thermal processes. Several types of thermal processes include flame combustion, fluidized bed combustion, infrared incineration, pyrolysis and plasma heat systems.

Coupled with these facilities and analytical procedures are programs for routine weekly decontamination waste disposal by incineration and burial personnel protection and safety training.

Potential hazardous waste generated by electrochemical processes is limited to drill cuttings, well purge water, personal protective equipment, and decontamination wastes. 

Clinical Waste and Medical Waste Wastes transported under UN3291 are wastes derived from the medical treatment of humans or animals or from bio-research, where there is a relatively low probability that infectious substances are present. Waste infectious substances which can be specified must be assigned to UN2814 or UN2900. Crossflow filtration separates the decontaminated waste solution from the MST solids containing the sorbed radioactive components. Stainless steel filter elements planned for use feature nominal 0.1 or 0.5-micron pore sizes. This filtration also captures any entrained undissolved solids associated with the salt solution retrieved from the high-level waste storage tanks. 

Finally, nationally acceptable disposal procedures must be strictly followed for the elimination of decontaminated wastes.
