Decontamination solutions

As concentrations of contaminants increase, the potential for permeation of PPE increase. The chemical and physical compatibility of decontamination solutions and methods with selected PPE should be determined before use [2].

Therefore, decontaminated solution would contain toxic arsenic. 

It hydrolyses in acidic medium to form HC1 and nonvolatile (solid) chlorovinylarsenious oxide, which is a less potent vesicant than Lewisite L-2. Hydrolysis in alkaline medium, as in decontamination with alcoholic caustic or carbonate solution, produces acetylene and trisodium arsenate (Na3AS04). Therefore, decontaminated solution would contain toxic arsenic. 

Flush eyes with water immediately. Use, the M258A1, M258, or M291 skin decontamination kit for liquid agent on the skin. Decontaminate individual equipment with the M280 individual equipment decontamination kit. Calcium hypochlorite (HTH), supertropical bleach (STB), household bleach, caustic soda, dilute alkali solutions, or decontaminating solution number 2 (DS2) are effective on equipment. Use steam and ammonia or hot, soapy water in a confined area.

The chemical and physical compatibility of decontamination solutions or other decontamination materials must be determined before use. Any decontamination method that permeates, degrades, damages, or otherwise impairs the functioning of the personal protective equipment (PPE) is incompatible with such PPE and should not be used. If a decontamination method does pose a direct health hazard, measures must be taken to protect both decontamination personnel and the workers being decontaminated. Figure 16.22 presents a decision aid for the evaluation of health and safety aspects of decontamination methods.

After all casualties and Force personnel are decontaminated, the site will either be torn down or converted to an equipment decontamination site. All items that cannot be decontaminated will be bagged and placed aside for future disposal. Starting at the dirty end of the site, all items to be decontaminated will be sprayed down with 5 percent HTH decontamination solution. Working from the dirty end towards the clean end, items will be passed down the line to the contamination control line (CCL) and be rinsed with clean water. Then, the item will be checked with detection equipment for contamination. If the equipment is clean, it will be passed across the CCL. 

When all equipment is removed from the decontamination site, the containment pits will be sprayed with decontamination solution, rinsed, and checked for contamination. All bag items meant for disposal will be picked up by another agency. Once the site has been... 

Approved Methods of Waste Disposal Decontamination of waste or excess material shall be accomplished according to procedures outlined above and can be destroyed by incineration in EPA approved incinerators according to appropriate provisions of federal, state, and local Resource Conservation Act (RCRA) regulations. Note Some decontamination solutions are hazardous waste according to RCRA regulations and must be disposed of according to these regulations.
