Sodium omadine

N-Hydroxythiopyridone is purchased from the Olin Corp. as an aqueous 40% solution of sodium 2-pyridinethiol-1-oxide (sodium omadine). Sodium omadine (1 L) is diluted with water (H2O, 600 mL) and the solution cooled to 0°C. Hydrochloric acid (350 mL) is added dropwise over a 20-min interval with continuous stirring and cooling for a further 20 min. The resulting suspension containing N-hydroxythio-pyridone is filtered and the solid is washed with H2O (2 L). The N-hydroxythiopyridone is dried over sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide under reduced pressure and... [Pg.210]

The sodium salt of N-hydroxy-2-pyridinethiones has a germicidal activity againts yeasts and fungi. Sodium omadine is a 40% aqueous solution of sodium pyrithione. It is used in the metallurgical industry as a component of water-based metalwork fluids, of aceto-polyvinyl lattices, water-based printer s ink, lubricant for synthetic fibers and anti-dandruff shampoos. A case was reported in a metallurgic worker. [Pg.1170]

Form Supplied in both the pyridinethione and the corresponding sodium salt (sometimes as the hydrate) are commercially available. A 40% aqueous solution of the sodium salt is also available and cheaper (also referred to as sodium omadine). The free thione can be obtained from this by acidification to neutrality using concentrated aq HCI, filtration of the crude product, and crystallization from EtOH. Alternatively, evaporation of the aqueous solution (<50 °C) and crystallization of the residue from ethanol provides the sodium salt, mp 285-290 °C, after slow crystallization from ethanol and drying at 50 under vacuum. ... [Pg.222]
