Optically pure (S)-benzyl methyl sulfoxide 139 can be converted to the corresponding a-lithio-derivative, which upon reaction with acetone gave a diastereomeric mixture (15 1) of the /S-hydroxysulfoxide 140. This addition reaction gave preferentially the product in which the configuration of the original carbanion is maintained. By this reaction, an optically active epoxy compound 142 was prepared from the cyclohexanone adduct 141181. Johnson and Schroeck188,189 succeeded in obtaining optically active styrene oxide by recrystallization of the condensation product of (+ )-(S)-n-butyl methyl sulfoxide 143 with benzaldehyde. [Pg.615]

Ketals of acetone and cyclohexanone with methyl, butyl, isopropyl and cyclohexyl alcohols are hydrogenolyzed to ethers and alcohols by catalytic hydrogenation. While platinum and ruthenium are inactive and palladium only partly active, 5% rhodium on alumina proves to be the best catalyst which, in the presence of a mineral acid, converts the ketals to ethers and alcohols in yields of 70-100% [933]. [Pg.130]

The piperidine, pyrrolidine, and morpholine enamines of cyclohexanone substituted in the 3-position by methyl, phenyl, and l-butyl have been prepared (49). The complexity of the NMR spectra in the ethylenic hydrogen region indicated a mixture of isomeric enamines. Estimation of the per cent of each isomer by examination of the NMR spectra was not possible, nor were the isomeric enamines separable by vapor-phase chromatography. [Pg.65]

Spectroscopic investigations of the lithium derivatives of cyclohexanone (V-phenylimine indicate that it exists as a dimer in toluene and that as a better donor solvent, THF, is added, equilibrium with a monomeric structure is established. The monomer is favored at high THF concentrations.110 A crystal structure determination was done on the lithiated A-phenylimine of methyl r-butyl ketone, and it was found to be a dimeric structure with the lithium cation positioned above the nitrogen and closer to the phenyl ring than to the (3-carbon of the imine anion.111 The structure, which indicates substantial ionic character, is shown in Figure 1.6. [Pg.49]

With all solvents studied including cyclohexanol, methyl ethyl ketone and cyclohexanone, heptavalent technetium is extracted most effectively from sodium sulfate and weakest from sodium nitrate or sodium perchlorate solutions. The data in Fig. 5 appear to be consistent with those on the solubilities of various sodium salts in pure tri-H-butyl phosphate. For example, the solubility of Na SO in TBP is extremely small compared with NaClO. ... [Pg.123]
