Acetate buffer (Park et al., 2007) and carbonate buffer solutions (Ko, Schlautman, and Carraway, 2000) have often been used to enhance electroosmotic flow in surfactant or cyclodextrin-enhanced electrokinetic systems. The effect of pH buffer is more clearly seen in soils of low carbonate content pH control significantly improves electroosmotic flow under such conditions. However, it was reported that a combination of buffer solution with a surfactant/cosolvent solution only marginally improved electroosmotic flow (Saichek, 2002). Consequently, pH control should be considered together with other variables influencing electroosmotic flow.

Carboplatin coupling to a-cyclodextrin delays decomposition and increases bioavailabdity (155). Over 110 days, ethyl-cellulose microcapsules loaded with both agents at 2.2% (w/w) afforded 56% carboplatin release. Against the established rat intracranial F98 glioma, microcapsule delivery of a-cyclodextrin alone conferred a median survival of 20 days. Comparatively, carboplatin polymers offered 34 day median survival (p< 0.001) and dual agent polymer therapy corresponded with a 51 day median survival (p < 0.01 vs. carboplatin alone). Thus, a-cyclodextrin enhanced carboplatin efficacy.

Enhancements in enantiomeric resolution are larger with the secondary derivative, which is consistent with the observation that enantiodiscrimination with cyclodextrins usually involves interactions with the hydroxyl groups on the secondary opening of the cavity.
