The inductively coupled plasma source (Fig. 20.11) comprises three concentric silica quartz tubes, each of which is open at the top. In the ion cyclotron resonance (ICR) analyzer, ions are trapped by a strong magnetic field. When it is struck or pressed, quartz generates an electric current. Materials having this property are known as piezoelectric materials.
