Cosmetics chamomile

Benefits A bitter aromatic herb traditionally used for its gentle sedative, calming properties. It is also used to calm the digestive system. It is a mild herb that has been used for children s complaints. Folklore German chamomile is used in toiletry and cosmetic preparations as a hair conditioner and lightener (Bown, 2003 British Herbal Medicine Association, 1983 Graenwald et al, 2002 Hutchens, 1973 Shealy, 1998 Tierra, 1998). 

Exposure to Asteraceous plants may also result in the development of contact dermatitis. One Serbian study has indicated that it is not unusual to detect sensitization to chamomile (Chamomilla recutita), arnica (Arnica montana), tansy (Tanacetum vulgare), and feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) (Jovanovic et al., 2004). Contact dermatitis, along with asthma and rhinitis, may also accompany occupational exposure to chamomile (Rudzki et al., 2003) and contact dermatitis to feverfew (Hausen, 1981). Similarly, chamomile in cosmetic products can also be a cause of dermatitis (Paulsen, 2002 Rycroft, 2003). Because chamomile-containing products, particularly in shampoos and other OTC products, are so widespread, the linkage to these types of adverse events are likely underreported. Also, use of royal jelly, a thick mixture of honey, pollen, and their allergens, has been associated with several cases of bronchospasm, and topical application of concentrated forms of bee pollen (propalis) to contact dermatitis (Perharic, 1993). Milk thistle has also been known to cause urticaria (De Smet, 2004).

Apart fitom chamomile no other cosmetics have been used for so long as these two antimony pigments, even though the toxic effects could not be ignored. The visceral residues of ancient Egyptian women contain considerably higher antimony levels than those of men [2]. This is unequivocal evidence that women had to suffer to be beautiful even in ancient times. 

A multistep sequence to guaiazulene may cover a hydroformylation step [150]. The sesquiterpene, which is found in nature in the guaiac and chamomile oil, is used as an anti-inflammatory compound in cosmetics. The starting point for the synthesis considered here was dehydrolinalool, which was converted into a cyclopentene-based unsaturated ketone (Scheme 6.53). The hydroformylation took place exclusively on the exocyclic double bound. Subsequent steps afforded guaiazulene. 

An example of monocyclic sesquiterpenic alcohols is (-l-)-o(-bisabolol (8-24). It occurs in citrus essential oils along with other sesquiterpenic alcohols, and represents the major component of the essential oil of chamomile flowers (Matricaria chamomilla, Asteraceae). a-Bisabolol (0.26%) and other sesquiterpenoids, such as monocyclic sesquiterpenic alcohol (Z)-lanceol (1.7%), bicyclic sesquiterpenic alcohol (Z)-a-essential components of white sandalwood oil (Santalum album, Santa-laceae) used in perfumery, cosmetics and aromatherapy. (Z)-Lanceol is also a component of sage species (Salvia spp., Lamiaceae) essential oil. Sesquiterpenic bicyclic alcohol (-F)-P-nootkatol is the precursor of ketone (-F)-nootkatone, an important component of grapefruit essential oil. Trivial and systematic names of the main sesquiterpenic alcohols are listed in Table 8.7. 

Extracts of both German and Roman chamomiles are used in cosmetics and body care products including bath preparations, hair dye formulas (for blond hair), shampoos, sunscreen preparations, mouthwashes, and others. The oils are used as fragrance components or active ingredients in soaps, detergents, creams, lotions, and perfumes. Use levels reported range from a low of 0.0005% in detergents to a maximum of 0.4% in perfumes considered... 

Dietary SupplementsfHealth Foods. German chamomile and to a lesser extent Roman chamomile crude flower heads or extracts are one of the most widely used herb tea ingredients, singly or in combination with other ingredients. Topical products are used in cosmetics against inflammation. Tinctures and extracts are used as mild sleep aids, antispas-modics, and digestive aids (foster). 

The main sources of these compounds are fruits like citras, apples, peaches and plant extracts like milk thistle, sophora, chamomile, roman chamomile, yarrow, ginkgo. Saint John s wort hcorice, etc. (Council of Europe, 1989). This group of active eompounds is extensively used in cosmetics because of their many possible beneficial applications. Below is a hst of their main biological properties. 

Many flavonoids modify the phagocytic processes of macrophages, the release of oxidant substances from neutrophils and the activation of mast cells. Their interaction with the arachidonic acid metabolism and inhibition of pro-inflammation mediators such as prostaglandins might be responsible for their anti-inflammatory activity. Chamomile exerts a powerful anti-inflammatory action due to its flavonoid content (Ramos et al., 1996). This action is mainly due to apigenin and lutein (Avallone et al., 2000). Traditionally, chamomile has been used in cosmetic products as soothing, anti-irritant and for sensitive skins.
