Particulate contaminants

In addition to the aforementioned issues regarding the incineration process, other concerns of relevance to public health need to be addressed. For example, hazardous waste to be fed to the incinerator and process effluents resulting from the incinerator should be stored in a manner that does not allow for uncontrolled environmental releases of potentially harmful substances. Dry, dusty materials should be enclosed or otherwise stored to prevent windborne transport of contaminated particulates. Wastes containing volatile organic compounds should be stored under conditions that safely collect and remove gases released from the wastes. 

Long-lasting measurements of the environmental background contamination (particulate matter and air in areas far away from cities and industry) and analytical data of food and biota prove that the transport into the environment is slowly decreasing. Overall, widespread PAH contamination in the coastal sediments of Singapore is apparent. With the rapid increase and activities in nanotechnology it may be expected that the volume of effiuents containing stabilized nanoparticulates will increase. Electrohltration processes are specihcally suited to treat effiuents with nanoparticulates of one specihc kind. Because the contaminant particulates will have comparable surface charges, electrical held strength can effectively be optimized to prevent cake formation. 

For the general population, exposure to RDX is limited to areas around Army ammunition plants where it is manufactured, converted to munitions, packed, loaded, or released through the demilitarization of antiquated munitions. The most likely route of exposure is ingestion of contaminated drinking water. Inhalation exposure of contaminated particulate matter produced during incineration of RDX-containing waste material is also a possible route of exposure. Occupational exposure to RDX can occur when workers handle RDX at Army ammunition plants. According to the National Occupational Exposure Survey (NOES) of 1981-1983 conducted by NIOSH, the estimated number of workers potentially exposed to RDX in the United States was 488 (NOES 1990).

At various times, the EDB also received radioactive wastes from the N Reactor lift station. Since the N Reactor was shut down In 1987, water has been maintained In the EDB [approximately 2,800,000 L (750,000 gal)] so that the bottom sludge layer will not become exposed. Subsequent drying of the sludge could expose receptors to airborne exposure from contaminated particulate matter. Filtered river water has been added as needed to maintain the water level. Documentation of the amount of water added to the EDB has not been maintained. There are no documented releases associated with the unit (DOE-RL 1990).

Also to purify small volumes ( 100 xl) for one-shot diagnostic applications [18], the dead end mode suffices. But for blood-diagnostic applications requiring continued operation and/or larger volumes (milliliters) of blood, one needs to resort to cross-flow [20,21].
