One of the most powerfiil group of chemicals in the body are organic compounds collectively referred to as hormones. The glands responsible for the production and release of hormones comprise the endocrine system. Endocrine activities have been identified in certain organs, such as the heart, kidneys, duodenum, liver and the islets of Langeihans in the pancreas (which contains the insulin gland), which are normally associated with other system functions. [Pg.1]

The curative material, which is abundant in green leafy vegetables, was named folic acid. However, this name is usually reserved for the synthetic compound used in dietary supplementation. The natural forms are largely the coenzymes (Fig. 6), which are collectively called folates. The last of the accepted human vitamins to be discovered was vitamin Bn. A cobalt-containing organic compound needed in very small amounts, it cures and prevents pernicious anemia, which was often a fatal disease of people over 60 years of age. Its complex structure (Fig. 7) was determined by X-ray diffraction after numerous efforts at chemicai characterization had failed. However, cy anocobalamin, the compound isolated and the form used in nutritional supplementation, is an artifact of the isolation and synthesis. The HRUBOUT process is a mobile in situ or ex situ thermal desorption process designed to remediate soils contaminated with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs). For the ex situ process, excavated soil is treated in a soil pile or in a specially designed container. Heated compressed air is injected into the soil, evaporating soil moisture and removing volatile and semivolatUe contaminants. Heavier hydrocarbons are oxidized as the soil temperature is increased to higher levels over an extended period of time.
