EXCESS SALT LABELING. For years, the subject of salt and its relation to hypertension heis been debated by consumers, federal officials, and food industry representatives. Commonly, a juice drink contains 10% fruit juice, which usually is a blend of several fruits. The 1990 Federal Nutrition and Labeling Act requites declaration of juice content so that the consumer can make a more informed choice (3). With cocktails and juice drinks, added sugars, acids, flavorings, colorings, and nutrients can be used to provide a wide variety of stable products of uniform quaUty. Because drinks requite less juice than 100% juice products, the drinks can be sold at a lower price. 

Fuel economy, typically expressed as distance driven per volume of fuel consumed, ie, ia km/L (mi/gal), is measured over two driving cycles specified by the Federal Test Procedure (63). Most carbide acetylene processes are wet processes from which hydrated lime, Ca(OH)2, is a by-product. The hydrated lime slurry is allowed to settle in a pond or tank after which the supernatant lime-water can be decanted and reused in the generator. Federal, state, and local legislation restrict the methods of storage and disposal of carbide lime hydrate and it has become increasingly important to find consumers for the by-product. The thickened hydrated lime is marketed for industrial wastewater treatment, neutrali2ation of spent pickling acids, as a soil conditioner in road constmction, and in the production of sand-lime bricks. 

In 1982, seven people died from consuming cyanide-laced Tylenol capsules. The incident resulted in a total product recall, massive negative pubHcity for the product, new requirements for safe packaging, and a federal statute making product tampering a crime (2). Since that time, the packaging industry has become visible to most consumers. This awareness has benefited the consumer by a reduction in loss of life due to consumption of adulterated products from tampering. Never before has an industry reacted so swiftly to resolve a problem.
