Most industrially developed nations have government agencies that assess risk to human health and the environment resulting from the manufacture and use of chemical substances. Industry, consultants, academics, and the research community also undertake such assessments. For example, in the U.S., the Office of Prevention, Pesticides, and Toxic Substances (OPPTS) devotes considerable resources to risk analyses in its review of commercial substances that are or will be released to the environment. Canada has a similar system, and so do most nations in the European Union and Japan. As the number of potentially hazardous substances introduced into commerce grows, maximizing the efficiency of these assessments becomes increasingly important. 

Identify external consultants (academic and CRO-based) to review internal efforts and deliver an external opinion of past efforts and the added-value of the population approach in general.

All these experts were involved in day-to-day activities, and had no time to pay serious attention to the Borneo oil problem. Another way in which academic chemists keep in touch with industry is through consulting. During the years I consulted at different times for Exxon, Chevron, Cyanamid, ENICHEM (Italy), and Pechiney-Kuhlman (Erance, when a friend, Lucien Sobel, was a research director). I enjoyed these contacts, because they kept me aware of current industrial developments and interests. At the same time, it was also rewarding to be able to suggest to my industrial friends new approaches and directions that on occasion were useful and resulted in practical applications.

Following a brief but influential career as an industrial chemist for Monsanto Corporation, Clark Landis began his academic career at the University of Colorado, Boulder, moving to the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1990, where he is currently a Professor in Inorganic Chemistry. Professor Landis was co-PI of the New Traditions Systemic Reform Project in Chemical Education and is co-author of Chemistry ConcepTests A Pathway to Interactive Classrooms and a companion video tape. He has long served as a consultant to Dow Chemical Company and is a member of its Technical Advisory Board. 

The classic book on the topic remains Reference Electrodes by D. I. G. Janz and G. J. Ives, Academic Press, New York, 1961. This book is still worth consulting despite its age. One of the best articles is Reference electrodes for voltammetry by Adrian W. Bott, Current Separations, 1995, 14(2), 33. Harnann, Andrew Hamnett and Wolf Vielstich, Wiley-VCH, Weinheim, 1998, has extensive discussions on reference electrodes.

Educators traditionally are expected to contribute to the areas of teaching, service and research - the academic trinity. Those kinder administrative souls have noted that contributions in two of these areas are acceptable. Even so, few make significant contributions to even one of these areas and only a small handful make significant contributions to all three areas. Professor Doctor Herman Francis Mark is one of these exceptional educators who has and continues to contribute significantly to all three areas. He continues to actively review research areas and to consult (research), to speak to learned and popular audiences (teaching) and to edit the Journal of Polymer Science and associated journals (service).

After earning bis Pb.D. at MET from John Sbeeban at age 22, be began bis independent academic career at tbe University of Illinois in 1950 and moved to Harvard University in 1959. Corey won tbe Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1990 for development of novel methods for the synthesis of complex natural compounds and retrosynthetic analysis. He is still carrying out active research at Harvard. Prof. Corey has been a consultant to Pfizer for more than 50 years. 

It is important to remember that many style manuals, as well as other printed texts, collections, and websites, are continuously being updated and revised. Be sure to check with your local librarian, bookstore, or the publisher to confirm that you have the most current edition of the materials that you need. In addition, it is always helpful to confirm with your instructor beforehand whether he or she favors a particular style manual or text. As mentioned previously, many academic disciplines and institutions prefer certain style manuals, while the business and professional world may use other texts. In the end, however, any text or other material you consult... 

In many academic circles and institutions, the Turabian book is the manual that is consulted for all scholarly papers and issues. It is thorough, to the point, and provides plenty of examples. Many professors and academic institutions will request that you follow the guidelines and examples used in this book. 

Tor a comprehensive discussion of the reactions and properties of vitamins and cofactors, readers are urged to consult Biochemistry The Chemical Reactions of Living Cells (2nd ed.) by D. E. Metzler (2000) Academic Press, Orlando. This text and reference book contains a valuable compilation of literature citations.
