Know Nothings

The integrity of products depends upon the quality of the devices used to create and measure their characteristics. This part of the standard specifies requirements for ensuring the quality of such devices. If the devices you use to create and measure characteristics are inaccurate, unstable, damaged, or in any way defective, the product will not possess the required characteristics and furthermore you will not know it. You know nothing about an object until you can measure it, but you must measure it accurately and precisely. Hence the devices you use need to be controlled. [Pg.397]

The second challenge is called the argument from ignorance. Any discussion of future people and their happiness, their needs and preferences, their rights and interests, forces us to make assumptions about who those people might be and what they will be like. But realistically, we know nothing about who they will be, what they will want or need, or even if they will exist at all. Since we are ignorant of future people, we have little basis to speak about our responsibilities to them. [Pg.492]

An explanation of potential energy involves an explanation of force both terms are simply another way of saying that we know nothing about the thing to be explained. A distinct advance is made when a force can be explained in terms of the kinetic energy of a system in motion, an illustration of which is afforded by the kinetic theory of gases, which replaced the supposed forces of repulsion between the molecules of gases (the existence of which is disproved by Joule s experiment, 73) by molecular impacts. [Pg.514]

Such a priest would know nothing of the matter. ... [Pg.124]

Requires K12K21 = 0. Open-loop gain is the same as the closed-loop gain. The controlled variable (or loop) / is not subject to interaction from other manipulated variables (or other loops). Of course, we know nothing about whether other manipulated variables may interact and affect other controlled variables. Nevertheless, pairing the i-th controlled variable to they-th manipulated variable is desirable. [Pg.206]

We know nothing of the pH value of the primeval ocean. However, the acidic character of volcanic exhalations must have meant that the young ocean was also... [Pg.39]

However enthusiastic we may be about these discoveries and successes, we must not forget that ready-made peptides were used we know nothing about the formation and origin of such peptides on the deserted, desolate Earth. [Pg.142]

We must give first an outline of the non-metal pathways which we observe in all cells. We start here because we know nothing about their abiotic chemistry but assume that cellular life arose from it. We shall assume that the basic requirement of all metabolism is the energised and catalysed synthesis of polysaccharides, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids. These are polymers (see Table 4.5), formed from monomers, all of which could have always arisen when energy was applied to the... [Pg.138]

Here was ignorance carried at last to a horrible contradiction. For when Judge Hebert wanted to know why the technical committee set up Monowitz, the defense answered that the twelve men wanted to "alleviate the lot of inmates at Auschwitz." And why should they want to alleviate sufferings of which they claimed to know nothing ... [Pg.227]

While on the subject of fluoroorganic compounds, one cannot overstate the importance of fluoropolymers in modem industry and science. There is hardly anyone around today who has never heard of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) [CF2—CF2] . Housewives who know nothing about fluorine use PTFE-coated frying pans or pots, and know that PTFE makes washing up easier, because virtually nothing sticks to a PTFE-coated utensil. [Pg.228]

You see, it wasn t always like that, Doc, he said. I mean, Maria and I had it good. And before Maria, well, I wasn t a young stud, you know, but I was OK. But now. . . He stopped, looked down, shuffled his feet, and went on, embarrassed. I still like to look at her, you know, and. . . touch her, and. .. things. But, you know, nothing happens. ... [Pg.69]

Too shocked by this outburst to reply, Elisas eyes brimmed with tears as Cagliostro continued with awful ferocity Now, hypocrite, answer me. Why have you fallen silent all of a sudden So you know nothing about X Choking back her emotions, Elisa summoned all her dignity ... [Pg.66]
