Constrictivity

C. It is secreted along with noradrenaline by the adrenal medulla, from which it may be obtained. It may be synthesized from catechol. It is used as the acid tartrate in the treatment of allergic reactions and circulatory collapse. It is included in some local anaesthetic injections in order to constrict blood vessels locally and slow the disappearance of anaesthetic from the site of injection. Ultimately it induces cellular activation of phosphorylase which promotes catabolism of glycogen to glucose. [Pg.16]

Whereas at the lower end of its range mercury porosimetry overlaps with the gas adsorption method, at its upper end it overlaps with photomicrography. An instructive example is provided by the work of Dullien and his associates on samples of sandstone. By stereological measurements they were able to arrive at a curve of pore size distribution, which was extremely broad and extended to very coarse macropores the size distribution from mercury porosimetry on the other hand was quite narrow and showed a sharp peak at a much lower figure, 10nm (Fig. 3.31). The swelling of the adsorbent can be directly demonstrated as in the experiments of Fig. 4.27 where the solid was a compact made from coal powder and the adsorbate was n-butane. Flow Nozzles. A flow nozzle is a constriction having an eUiptical or nearly eUiptical inlet section that blends into a cylindrical throat section as shown in Figure 8. Nozzle pressure differential is normally measured between taps located 1 pipe diameter upstream and 0.5 pipe diameters downstream of the nozzle inlet face. Nontraditional Hormones. Novel hormones identified ia cardiovascular tissue have profound effects on maintenance of blood pressure and blood volume ia mammals. Atrial natriuretic hormone (ANH) is a polypeptide hormone secreted from the atria of the heart. When the cardiac atrium is stretched by increased blood volume, secretion of ANH is stimulated ANH ia turn increases salt and water excretion and reduces blood pressure (6). Endothelin is a polypeptide hormone secreted by endothehal cells throughout the vasculature. Although endothelin is released into the circulation, it acts locally in a paracrine fashion to constrict adjacent vascular smooth muscle and increase blood pressure (7). [Pg.172]

The pneumatic deposition of the filament bundles onto the moving belt results in formation of the web. A pneumatic gun uses high pressure air to move the filaments through a constricted area of lower pressure but higher velocity, as in a venturi tube. Pneumatic jets used in spunbonded production have been described (17,24).
