These ore types occur in basal Lower Proterozoic beds unconformably situated above Archaean basement rocks composed of granitic and metamorphic strata. The Chilean nitrate deposits are located in the north of Chile, in a plateau between the coastal range and the Andes mountains, in the Atacama desert.
