Thermal confinement

SCTA has many advantages over conventional TA techniques SCTA data are less liable to contain artifacts due to inhomogeneous reactions within the sample matrix SCTA generates superior kinetic data for the measured thermal event SCTA offers defined preparative conditions for porous or finely divided solids such as coals - it is ideal for char preparation under defined conditions. Also, SCTA confines thermal events to occur within a narrow temperature range and clearly delineates the beginning and end of such events, thereby offering superior resolution of thermal events associated with materials. However, there is a major disadvantage of SCTA as compared with conventional TA techniques. The experimental time span required to complete an SCTA experiment is markedly increased over that for a conventional TA run due to the obvious fact that it is the thermal characteristics of the sample itself that control the time frame of the experiment rather than the operator. [Pg.4752]

Because the cytotoxic effects of the energetic lithium-7 and alpha particles are spaciaHy limited to a range of only about one-ceU diameter, the destmctive effects are confined to only one or two cells near the site of the event. Thus BNCT involves the selective deUvery of sufficiendy high concentrations of B-containing compounds to tumor sites followed by the irradiation of these sites with a beam of relatively nondestmctive thermal neutrons. The resulting cytotoxic reaction can then in theory destroy the tumor cells that are intimately associated with B target. [Pg.253]

Expanded joints (Fig. 10-138) are confined to the smaller pipe sizes of ductile metals. A smooth finish is required on the outside of the pipe and on the faces of the ridges inside the bore. Pipe and bore must have the same coefficient of thermal expansion. Furthermore, it is essential that the pipe metal have a lower yield point than the metal... [Pg.958]

Thermal fatigue damage is not confined to complex structures or assemblies. It can occur at the surface of quite simple shapes and appear as a network of cracks. [Pg.267]

Materials which (in themselves) are capable of detonation or of explosive decomposition or of explosive reaction but which require a strong initiating source or which must be heated under confinement before initiation. Includes materials which are sensitive to thermal or mechanical shock at elevated temperatures and pressures or which react explosively with water without requiring heat or confinement. Fire fighting should be done from an explosive resistant location. [Pg.10]

Similarly, the Site B contractor s SSAHP provided corporate policy and procedures for permit-required confined space entry but lacked the site-specific detail necessary to describe the application of the corporate policy to procedures at the site. For example, the SSAHP did not identify specific components of the thermal treatment unit that presented confined space hazards, nor did it describe the specific circumstances or procedures that would require employee entry into these areas. In addition, the plan stated that the contractor would maintain an onsite employee confined space rescue team, but did not identify the members of this team. The SSAHP for Site F also contained a generic confined space entry program but did not identify the specific location of confined space hazards present at the site. [Pg.201]

The combinations of failures and non-failed conditions define the state of the pJani at the right branches. The damage associated with these plant damage states are calculated using thermal-hydraulic analyses to determine temperature profiles that are related to critical chemical reactions, explosions and high pressure. These end-states serve as initiators fot breaking confinement that leads to release in the plant and aquatic and atmospheric release outside ol the plant,... [Pg.113]

The importance of respiratory heat and water losses is not confined to the respiratory structures. Inspiration of cold, hot, or dry air poses the potential threats of thermal injury or desiccation to the airway epithelium" - T8,69 g challenge to whole-body thermoregulation. [Pg.219]

Characteristics of the air jet in the room might be influenced by reverse flows, created by the jet entraining the ambient air. This air jet is called a confined jet. If the temperature of the supplied air is equal to the temperature of the ambient room air, the jet is an isothermal jet. A jet with an initial temperature different from the temperature of the ambient air is called a nonisother-mal jet. The air temperature differential between supplied and ambient room air generates buoyancy forces in the jet, affecting the trajectory of the jet, the location at which the jet attaches and separates from the ceiling/floor, and the throw of the jet. The significance of these effects depends on the relative strength of the thermal buoyancy and inertial forces (characterized by the Archimedes number). [Pg.446]

As with most other metal and alloys systems, nickel and certain of its alloys may suffer intergranular corrosion in some circumstances. In practice, intergranular corrosion of nickel alloys is usually confined to the vicinity of welds as a result of the effects produced by the welding operation on the structure of the material in those regions. Alloys that are subjected to other similarly unfavourable thermal treatments may also become susceptible. The compositions of most commercial nickel alloys that are marketed today are. [Pg.782]

Plastics will continue to be required in space applications from rockets to vehicles for landing on other planets. The space structures, reentry vehicles, and equipment such as antennas, sensors, and an astronaut s personal communication equipment that must operate outside the confines of a spaceship will encounter bizarre environments. Temperature extremes, thermal stresses, micrometeorites, and solar radiation are sample conditions that are being encountered successfully that include the use of plastics. [Pg.108]
