Atmospheric releases

Practical separation techniques for hquid particles in gases are discussed. Since gas-borne particulates include both hquid and sohd particles, many devices used for dry-dust collection (discussed in Sec. 17 under Gas-Sohds Separation ) can be adapted to liquid-particle separation. Also, the basic subject of particle mechanics is covered in Sec. 6. Separation of liquid particulates is frequently desirable in chemical processes such as in countercurrent-stage contacting because hquid entrainment with the gas partially reduces true countercurrency. Separation before entering another process step may be needed to prevent corrosion, to prevent yield loss, or to prevent equipment damage or malfunc tion. Separation before the atmospheric release of gases may be necessaiy to prevent environmental problems and for regula-toiy compliance.

Examples of such backup features are given for each utility below. In designs where all pressure rehef valves discharge into a closed collection system, because of environmental restrictions, a total failure of one utility deserves more careful consideration since there are no atmospheric releases which would tend to relieve the load on the closed system.

Other energy sector concerns are methane emissions from unburned fuel, and from natural gas leaks at various stages of natural gas production, transmission and distribution. As a result of its use as an insecticide on fruit trees, vegetables, and other crops, endosulfan is released directly to the atmosphere during application. No information was found in the available literature regarding atmospheric releases from manufacturing or formulation operations, or occurrence of the compound in air samples collected at NPL sites.

With the growing concern about global climate change, alternatives to the atmospheric release of C02 are being studied. Sequestration of the C02 is an option that could provide a viable near-term solution. 

Hydrocarbon releases in the petroleum industry are either gaseous, mists or liquids and are either atmospheric releases or pressurized. Gas and mist releases are considered more significant since they are readily ignitable since they are in the gas state and due to the generation of vapor clouds which if ignited are instantly destructive in a widespread nature versus liquid fires that may be less prone to ignition, generally localized and relatively controllable. 

If released under atmospheric conditions the gas will either rise or fall depending on its vapor density and will be directed in the path of the prevailing wind. Assuming that only 1% of the -hexane of motor fuels is released to environmental media, such releases could be on the same order of magnitude as the total amount of relatively pure -hexane associated with the major end-uses described in Chapter 4. There is also a potential for atmospheric release of endrin, endrin aldehyde, and endrin ketone from hazardous waste sites. Endrin has been detected in air samples collected at 4 of the 102 NPL sites where endrin has been detected in some environmental medium (HazDat 1996). No information was found on detections of endrin aldehyde or endrin ketone in air at any NPL hazardous waste site (HazDat 1996)...
