Joints expanded

A continuing commitment to materials development characterises one strand of structural innovation. Composite forms generate interesting interfaces. This Texan art gallery seeks to modulate light through a carefully shaped baffle system. Ferro-cement louvres become the lower booms of trusses triangulated with cast steel struts. Joints expand like knuckles to transmit loads. [Pg.194]

The acquisition of the rights to the viscose process became one of the most profitable investments of aU time. Interest in the new fiber was intense, and growth of production capacity was exponential. By 1907, the Courtauld company was selling aU the artificial sHk it could produce and proceeded to expand into the U.S. market. In 1910 they formed the American Viscose Co. and in 1911 started the first U.S. viscose factory at Marcus Hook. By 1939, Courtaulds had six factories in the United States, seven in the United Kingdom, one in Erance, one in Canada, and joint ventures in Germany and Italy. [Pg.344]

In a similar announcement, Eastman Chemical Co. and Rhc ne-Poulenc S.A. have recently formed a 50/50 joint venture to make 59,090 metric tons /yr of cellulose acetate filter tow and fiber by the fourth quarter of 1993 (107). Eastman Chemical Co. aimounced a multimillion doUar expansion of its own filter tow capacity by approximately 11,363 metric tons/yr to be completed by mid-1991. The expansion brings the company s worldwide filter tow capacity up to 154,545 metric tons (108). Eastman Chemical Co. aimounced plans to expand the production of cellulose acetate butryates and cellulose acetate propionates by 20 and 40%, respectively, by mid-1991 (109). [Pg.257]

Expanded joints (Fig. 10-138) are confined to the smaller pipe sizes of ductile metals. A smooth finish is required on the outside of the pipe and on the faces of the ridges inside the bore. Pipe and bore must have the same coefficient of thermal expansion. Furthermore, it is essential that the pipe metal have a lower yield point than the metal... [Pg.958]

V-clamp joints (Fig. 10-140) are attached to the pipe by butt-weld or expanded joints. Theoretically, there is only one relative position of the parts in which the conical surfaces of the clamp are completely in contac t with the conical surfaces of the stub ends. In actual practice, there is considerable flexing of the stub ends and the clamp also complete contact is not required. This permits use of elastomeric gaskets... [Pg.959]

The force required to overcome the static friction of the pipe in expanding or contracting on its supports, from installed to operating position. The length of pipe considered should be that located between the anchor and the expansion joint. [Pg.1002]

Expanding the tube into the grooved tube holes provides a stronger joint but results in greater difficulties during tube removal. [Pg.1071]

Type S is a floating head type. As the tubes heat up, they expand. As they expand, the floating head moves back and forth, but the pressure seal is not at the sliding joint. The pressure seal is at the fixed shell Joint in the outer head, which contains the pressure. The floating head floats free inside the pressure vessel as the tubes move. Types P and W are floating heads where the movement of the head effects the seal between either the shell-side or tube-side fluid and atmosphere. [Pg.57]

As a caution, the rolling of tubes into their tubesheets is a very special job that requires experience and feel, even though today there are electronically controlled rolling and expanding tools. The tubes must be just right, not over nor under expanded, to give a good joint and seal. [Pg.35]

A heat-exchanger tube is expanded into the tubeplate to effect a joint. However, to avoid bulging the tube outside the confines of the tubeplate, expansion never takes place through the whole tubeplate thickness and a... [Pg.22]

These Recommendations expand and replace the Tentative Rules for Carbohydrate Nomenclature [1] issued in 1969 jointly by the IUPAC Commission on the Nomenclature of Organic Chemistry and the IUB-IUPAC Commission on Biochemical Nomenclature (CBN) and reprinted in [2]. They also replace other published JCBN Recommendations [3-7] that deal with specialized areas of carbohydrate terminology however, these documents can be consulted for further examples. Of relevance to the field, though not incorporated into the present document, are the following recommendations ... [Pg.47]
