Reduction treatments in the XPS preparation chamber consisted of heating at 773K for 1 h of the calcined precursors, first under vacuum, to remove most of the contaminants adsorbed on the samples ( H2O, CO2, etc), and then under 10 torr of H2 for another horn at the appropriate temperatures in the range 300K-773K. Since about 1960 a variety of newer mathematical and computational techniques have been introduced. These are sometimes called, collectively, modem control theory . Their application to industrial process control so far has been limited. Study of control systems by these method requires a fairly capable computer on-line implementation usually also requires an on-line computer. The CORE Electronic Chemistry Library is a joint project of Cornell University, OCLC (On-line Computer Library Center), Bell Communications Research (Bellcore), and the American Chemical Society. The CORE database will contain the full text of American Chemical Society Journals from 1980, associated information from Chemical Abstracts Service, and selected reference texts. It will provide machine-readable text that can be searched and displayed, graphical representations of equations and figures, and full-page document images. The project will examine the performance obtained by the use of a traditional printed index as compared with a hypertext system (SUPERBOOK) and a document retrieval system (Pixlook) (6,116). [Pg.131]

Most aroma chemicals are relatively high boiling (80—160°C at 0.4 kPa = 3 mm Hg) Hquids and therefore are subject to purification by vacuum distillation. Because small amounts of decomposition may lead to unacceptable odor contamination, thermal stabiUty of products and by-products is an issue. Important advances have been made in distillation techniques and equipment to allow routine production of 5000 kg or larger batches of various products. In order to make optimal use of equipment and to standardize conditions for distillations and reactions, computer control has been instituted. This is particulady well suited to the multipurpose batch operations encountered in most aroma chemical plants. In some instances, on-line analytical capabihty is being developed to work in conjunction with computer controls. [Pg.85]
