Parts with fiber volume fractions up to 60% can be fabricated by filament winding. The procedure is often used to manufacture composite rocket motors, corrosion-resistant tanks and storage containers, and piping for below-ground appHcations. [Pg.8]

Ease of cure, easy removal of parts from mold surfaces, and wide availabiHty have made polyesters the first choice for many fiber-reinforced composite molders. Sheet mol ding compound, filament winding, hand lay-up, spray up, and pultmsion are all weU adapted to the use of polyesters. Choosing the best polyester resin and processing technique is often a challenge. The polyester must be a type that is weU adapted to the processing method and must have the final mechanical properties requked by the part appHcation. Table 1 Hsts the deskable properties for a number of fiber-reinforced composite fabrication methods. [Pg.18]

Applications. Epoxy resias constitute over 90% of the matrix resia material used ia advanced composites. In addition, epoxy resias are used ia all the various fabrication processes that convert resias and reinforcements iato composite articles. Liquid resias ia combiaation, mainly, with amines and anhydride are used for filament winding, resia transfer mol ding, and pultmsion. Parts for aircraft, rocket cases, pipes, rods, tennis rackets, ski poles, golf club shafts, and fishing poles are made by one of these processes with an epoxy resia system. [Pg.23]

Filament winding is one of the many fabrication techniques commercially available for the manufacture of composite parts. [Pg.256]

This paper will discuss the formulation of the simulator for the filament winding process which describes the temperature and extent of cure in a cross-section of a composite part. The model consists of two parts the kinetic model to predict the curing kinetics of the polymeric system and the heat transfer model which incorporates the kinetic model. A Galerkin finite element code was written to solve the specially and time dependent system. The program was implemented on a microcomputer to minimize computer costs. [Pg.257]

Halpin (1) and Tsai (2) have presented treatises that address the effects of fiber content, orientation and properties on the composite s mechanical performance. A numerically controlled filament winding machine is capable of placing fiber in precise, three dimensional, engineered patterns. Future research addressing the molecular role of the resin s infrastructure on mechanical performance, will couple filament wound composite... [Pg.537]

Reinforce injected parts locally. A more lightweight part can be made by reinforcing it at specific spots with an insert of unidirectional composite manufactured, for example, by filament winding. [Pg.744]

However, the high level of patents concerning nanocomposites and prepregs is obvious. On the other hand, the SMC/BMC patent level appears relatively low. The amount of patents concerning laminates, UD composites and filament winding seems to correspond to their level of production. [Pg.845]

Chemical Vapor Infiltration (CVI). Recall from Section 3.4.2 that CVI is primarily nsed to create ceramic matrix composites, CMCs. Fabrication of CMCs by CVI involves a sequence of steps, the first of which is to prepare a preform of the desired shape and fiber architecture. This is commonly accomplished by layup onto a shaped form of layers from multifilament fibers using some of the techniques previously described, such as filament winding. [Pg.802]

The stability, growth, and transport of voids during composite processing is reviewed. As a framework for this model, the autoclave process was selected, but the concepts and equations may be applied equally effectively in a variety of processes, including resin transfer molding, compression molding, and filament winding. In addition, the problem of resin transport and its intimate connection with void suppression are analyzed. [Pg.182]

On-line consolidation techniques are commonly used in manufacturing processes, such as filament winding and tape laying. Despite differences in the machines used to implement these two manufacturing processes, similar procedures are required to ensure complete bonding between the composite layers. The basic components of on-line consolidation process are illustrated in Figure 7.2. [Pg.211]
