Molding resin-transfer

Resin transfer moulding is used to replace the hand lay-up process for better productivity and quahty. In this process, resin is injected into a closed cavity mold that is filled [Pg.462]

Resin transfer molding (RTM) refers to a special technique used to produce polymer matrix composites by injecting catalyzed resin into a mold impression having the shape of the section to be realized and previously inserted with the dry reinforcement. The chamber is obtained matching the two parts of the mold. There can be different types of mold the most conunon are those made from fiberglass or metal. [Pg.30]

The first two steps are common to any kind of technique, so here, it is not appropriate to deal with them further. For the remaining steps, they are mainly strengthening application following the direction and the desired sequence, mold closing, and resin injection. [Pg.30]

This is mainly a cold process, although the mold can also be preheated to speed up the proceedings. Pressure exerted by a liquid resin is uniformly spread out on the sheet to be produced, allowing for an even thickness and excellent product quality. Usually, the pressures exerted for injection range between 0.5 and 4 bar, and the injection delays range between 20 s and 2 min. [Pg.30]

The resin transfer molding forming technique is particularly interesting for the opportunity of automation it offers and, therefore, large-scale production. Moreover, very large members can be thus molded. [Pg.30]

Advantages of RTM are that the molded part has two finished surfaces, and the overall process may emit a lower level of styrene vapor if the polyester resin used contains styrene. The mold, unlike a compression or TP stamping mold, is completely closed to defined stops prior to final part formation/curing. This procedure provides a more reproducible part thickness and tends to minimize trimming and deflashing of the final part. [Pg.275]

If low pressure is a requirement, as with large panels, a low injection pressure generally can be maintained and the fill time extended. In cases where low pressure and a fast fill time are required, the preform construction must be carefully tailored to promote a rapid low-pressure fill without fiber movement. For a high volume, the cycle time will vary, depending on the complexity of the part and the degree of part integration achieved. For a simple component, a 1 min. cycle is commercially achievable at a production rate of 1.2 million parts per year. For complex parts, a cycle time of 6 min. or longer could be needed. [Pg.275]

Resin transfer molding With vacuum assisted RTM, this process can be called infusion molding. RTM usually uses liquid TS plastics that is transferred or injected into an enclosed mold usually at low pressures of about 60 psi (410 kPa) in which reinforcement... [Pg.517]

SCRIMP process This Seeman Composites Resin Infusion Process (SCRIMP) is described as a gas-assist resin transfer molding process. As an example glass fiber fabrics/ thermoset vinyl ester polyester plastic and polyurethane foam panels (for insulation) are placed in a segmented tool. A vacuum is pulled with a bag so that a huge amount of plastic can be drawn into the mold (Marco process approach). Its curved roof is made separately and bonded to the box with mechanical and adhesive fastening. It is similar to various reinforced plastics molding processes. [Pg.522]

Differentiate between pultrusion, resin transfer molding, and filament winding methods for fiber-reinforced composite production. [Pg.681]

Resin transfer molding (RTM) is a hybrid of two polymer processing techniques we have already described transfer molding and reaction injection molding (RIM). The key difference is that a reinforcement is incorporated during molding to create a composite. [Pg.798]
