Fabrication fiber-reinforced composites

Unsaturated polyester resins predominate among fiber-reinforced composite matrices for several reasons. A wide variety of polyesters is available and the composites fabricator must choose the best for a particular appHcation. The choice involves evaluation of fabrication techniques, temperatures at which the resin is to be handled, cure time and temperature desked, and requked cured properties (see Polyesters, unsaturated). [Pg.18]

Ease of cure, easy removal of parts from mold surfaces, and wide availabiHty have made polyesters the first choice for many fiber-reinforced composite molders. Sheet mol ding compound, filament winding, hand lay-up, spray up, and pultmsion are all weU adapted to the use of polyesters. Choosing the best polyester resin and processing technique is often a challenge. The polyester must be a type that is weU adapted to the processing method and must have the final mechanical properties requked by the part appHcation. Unlike most conventional materials, there is a very close relation between the manufacture of a composite material and its end use. The manufacture of the material is often actually part of the fabrication process for the structural element or even the complete structure. Thus, a complete description of the manufacturing process is not possible nor is it even desirable. The discussion of manufacturing of laminated fiber-reinforced composite materials is restricted in this section to how the fibers and matrix materials are assembled to make a lamina and how, subsequently, laminae are assembled and cured to make a laminate. [Pg.18]

In this chapter, we define some important terms and parameters that are commonly used with fibers and fiber products such as yams, fabrics, etc., and then describe some general features of fibers and their products. These definitions, parameters, and features serve to characterize a variety of fibers and products made from them, excluding items such as fiber reinforced composites. These definitions and features are generally independent of fiber type, i.e. polymeric, metallic, glass or ceramic fibers. They depend on the geometry rather than any material characteristics. [Pg.8]

This section centers on fiber coatings for non-oxide eomposites in which either the fiber or the matrix is a non-oxide ceramic. Although oxide fiber-reinforced composites have been studied, most of the research available in the literature has focused on SiC fiber-reinforced composites. For example, mullite (3Al203-2Si02) fiber-reinforced SiC matrix composites have been fabricated by CVI (chemical vapor infiltration). However, SiC fiber-reinforced SiC matrix (SiC/SiC) composites are superior for the following reasons (1) mullite fiber-reinforced composites do not improve resistance to oxidation, one of the major factors limiting the use of non-oxide composites and (2) SiC fibers have mechanical properties superior to those of mullite fibers. This section will be concerned primarily with SiC fiber-reinforced ceramic composites, which offer the best oxidation resistance of any non-oxide fiber at high temperatures (particularly above 1,100°C [2012°F]). [Pg.71]

The purpose of the present investigation was to study the trimerization of aromatic nitriles under the conventional resin/fiber composite fabrication conditions using p-toluenesulfonic acid as a catalyst. Trimerization parameters investigated included reaction temperature, pressure, time, and concentration of catalyst. The influence of the nature of aromatic nitriles on trimerization was also studied. Also presented are preliminary results on the use of the catalytic trimerization of the nitrile-terminated imide oligomers to fabricate graphite fiber reinforced composites. [Pg.146]

One approach for fabricating fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composites is the directed oxidation of metals, a process first introduced by Lanxide Corporation [1, 2] and later used successfully to produce turbine engine and aerospace components. As there are no fibers aligned in the through-thickness direction of 2-D fiber-reinforced composites, a possible mode of failure is by shear between the fabric plies. Hence, interlaminar shear strength is an important property. Tests were conducted using the ASTM D2344-84 short beam method. The average interlaminar shear strength from five samples was measured to be 62 MPa at room temperature. [Pg.282]
