Consolidation and development of interlaminar bond strength for thermoplastic matrix composites have been modeled by two mechanisms intimate contact and autohesion. Intimate contact describes the process by which two irregular ply surfaces become smooth (Fig. 13.10). In areas in which the ply surfaces are in contact, autohesion occurs, and the long thermoplastic polymer chains diffuse across the ply boundaries. Filament winding with thermoplastic matrix materials is considered an on-line consolidation process in that local... [Pg.404]

Vinyl esters are thermosetting resins that consist of a polymer backbone with an acrylate or methacrylate termination. The backbone component of vinyl ester resins can be derived from epoxide, polyester or urethane but those based on epoxide resins have most commercial significance. Bisphenol A epoxy formed vinyl esters were designed for chemical resistance and commonly formulated for viscosity for use in filament winding of chemical containers. Typically styrene is used as a reactive dilutent to modify viscosity. Phenolic novolac epoxies are used to produce vinyl esters with higher temperature capability and good solvent resistance, particularly in corrosive environments, and their FRP composites have demonstrated initial economy and better life cycle costs compared with metals. [Pg.299]

The mechanical properties of FRP composites are dependent upon the ratio of fibre and matrix material, the mechanical properties of the constituent materials, the fibre orientation in the matrix, and ultimately the processing and methods of fabrication, which are the subject of Part II. Chapters discuss prepreg processing, liquid composite moulding (LCM), filament winding processes and pultrusion of advanced fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. [Pg.4]
